The is a known issue with iTunes Match and IOS for Smart Playlists. The best resolution is to use automated scripts to remove the large number of redundant playlists.

Unfortuately, that's not really an option for me. I've got 41,587 copies of a playlist and iTunes can't even boot properly anymore. I can't forsee how to fix this from the client-side at all given that limitation. I suspect we'll need to wait for Apple to do something server-side to resolve it.

Had this problem, enormously frustrating!!
Doug's Applescripts for itunes- Delete Empty Playlists, took about 3 seconds - job done!

Unfortunately takes too long. I've got 71000 odd playlists and it deletes a single playlist every 10seconds...
You can work out how long that will take.

Your alternative it to open up the library.xml file and hand edit the playlists (which I think are at the very end), then make a new itunes library and import the xml file. Note, the xml files does not contain all the information the main library file contains (I'm note sure where the exact differences lie).

Not sure that editing the XML will do the trick, I've blasted my iTunes library a few times recently and the playlists persist. This would suggest it's an iCloud issue?

Thanks Limnos but sadly that doesn't work because as soon as I turn iTunes Match back on it immediately pulls the playlists back down. I need to actually get them deleted from iTunes Match and the only way is to tell iTunes to delete them...

The solution I gave above using an AppleScript worked briefly and then the playlists appeared again.
This only seemed to start when I tries to creat a custom playlist...
