- Word Processing documents can be opened directly only in Pages (AppleWorks 6 only).
- Draw Documents can be opened directly only in EazyDraw (the more expensive version from their website, not the cheaper one from the Mac App Store, and you will need v4.0 'Retro' not the most recent version) or Intaglio (though this appears not to be able to handle very complex drawings).
- Spreadsheets can be opened directly only in Numbers.
- Presentations can be opened directly only in Keynote.
Nothing can open Appleworks databases or Paint documents. If you cannot restore AppleWorks from the original install disk or copy it from a backup you have lost any documents of this type.
More detailed information here:
If you have any Appleworks 5 or earlier documents these cannot be opened in Pages. If they are AW6 I don't know why Pages is not opening them. Do you not have your install disks? - either AppleWorks if you bought it separately, or you original Mac's install disks if it was bundled with your Mac (a practice which stopped severl years back).
You should also be aware, in case you are considering upgrading to Lion at some point, or buying a new Mac (which will have Lion on it) that AppleWorks will not run on Lion.
Roger has stated the options. If you don't have an installation disk for AppleWorks, or an existing copy on one of your machines, I'd suggest a few possible sources:
Your school or school district may have the disks, and may have a license that allows installation on faculty machines.
Someone in your school district may still have Appleworks running on one of their machines. A note on the inter-school communication system might result in your being able to visit and do a mass conversion.
Hard Core Mac has had AppleWorks 6.2.4 installation disks available recently, and likely still has some.
The AppleWorks 6.2.9 updater is still available. For the US English version, click the Download button at top right. For other language versions, look in the list on the left.
