Q: Audio interrupted when switching camera angles (help request)

When switching camera angles in FCPX 10.0.3, a clip is split into two and there's a slight break in the audio at that point. I'm using the Angle Viewer, and I've selected video-only switching, but due to the Blade tool there's still a gap in the audio whenever I switch camera angles. For instance, if I switch cameras (by pressing 1 or 2 on the keyboard or clicking the respective camera view) during dialog, the word is interrupted by a glitch or hiccup at that point.

My setup is two cameras synchronized with external audio. My goal is simply to be able to switch from one camera angle to another while retaining the audio exactly. I wish to make hard cuts (i.e., no cross dissolves or other transitions)—surely this must be the easiest and most common of multicam edits?

Is there any setting to automatically crossfade adjacent audio clips? The Expand Audio/Video command doesn't allow for separate audio/video editing on multicam clips. Further, the Detach Audio command also doesn't work on multicam clips. Adding cross dissolves only to audio therefore appears to be impossible for multicam editing, at least not without extremely time-consuming surgical editing, which clearly isn't a feasible solution.

I'd be extremely grateful for any help.

Did you set your audio angle first?

    If not then...

    1. Select "Audio Only"

    2. Click on the angle wanted for your main audio

    3. "Select "Video Only"

    4. Commense with multicam.

Thanks very much for your helpful reply. I went back and made sure I did everything exactly as you described, yet I still have audio glitches every time I switch cameras (using video-only switching).

I thought it might be my weak system (MacBook Pro 13 2010) but the glitches also are audible in the exported video. I uploaded a short sample of an exported video:

The audio angle is from the outboard audio recorder and remains consistent from one camera angle to the next, save for the glitches.

    Any ideas?

Do you know if your media's sample rate matches the sample rate of your project? You can check these in the inspector on each clip in the Event Browser and then the project itself with the Project Library.

Thanks for this suggestion. I double-checked, and yes, the sample rate for all clips (cameras plus external audio) is 48 kHz. I was certain to set the audio recorder to 48 kHz to avoid unnecessary sample rate conversion.

It shouldn't matter, though, since I'm using one audio source exclusively. I think it must simply be a bug in 10.0.3.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what may be triggering this behavior, and can someone perhaps post a successful video of a similar setup (multiple cameras with external audio)?

Same exact issue. I have a four camera interview I am trying to edit. The auto sync worked magically, but in Video Only mode it is still switching the audio. I have toggled. The green audio square stays in place, the timeline shows the white dotted lines on the audio track (indicating an edit but no cut per the manual).

Seems to be a bug that the Video Only switching is not working for some.

Are you cutting or switching? Can you post a screen shot of the Angle Viewer and timeline?

Why are you using the blade tool on the multicam clip?

After closer inspection it is staying on the main audio track, but there is a very distinct audio interruption and in some cases even looks like the audio peaks for a split second.

The blade is what shows up when you hover over the angle windows, indicates a switch and cut i believe.

Can you post a screenshot close up of this? Anything you can tell us about your media, video and audio especially? I've tested multiple multicam clips and haven't had this.

    I figured out my issue.

The primary clip I was using for audio had the Background Noise removal engaged. Apparently when you switch video it cause this to temporarily release and re-engage creating a very audible change in the sound when you switch clips. Disabling this is now causing the clips to switch with no audible change, however there is a lot of background noise in this shot.

    Hope this helps others.

I think this describes my issue as well. Thank you for your investigation!

I had the background noise reduction enabled on the angle I was using for the multicam audio. I disabled that, and the volume adjustment I had made to the track, and now the full multicam clip with angle switching appears to be playing without audio interruptions.

I'm working on a possible work-around: In the Project Timeline, I took all of the "sub-clips" representing each new angle, and created a new compound clip containing all of them. I then applied the noise reduction to the compound clip. This appears to apply the noise reduction to the compound clip as a whole, instead of each individual angle cut, and therefore does not interrupt the audio on an angle cut.

Write back if it works for you.

Wow, thanks Nathan. You're the first person I've come across who has had a solution that still allows for audio enhancements to be turned on. While still a workaround, your method works and solves the problem of this initial thread (it certainly helped me out). This should be marked "solved."

Hey, it's 4 years later, and I had this same issue in the current FCP X, and your solution fixed it. Thank you!
