Q: Problems with SMB and file sharing in Lion

Thanks very much for your explanation, it's clarified a great deal and will save me a great deal of frustration. As far as implementing Samba myself, do you recommend using SMBUP as in previous posts (I couldn't get that to work for whatever reason) or is it better to go through the manual option in terminal and see if that works (even though I'm not very comfortable with that)?

I haven't used SMBUP.  It seems like a handy tool where it works.

An alternative approach  is to use FTP.  It is built into OS X, and is easy enough to enable and configure.  If you want a GUI to drive the configuration you could try PureFTPd Manager, which I have used in 10.6, and which worked well.  I am not sure if it works in 10.7, but I don't see any reason why it won't..

Can you share the contents of your smb.conf file? Remember SMBUp can't currently understand "Home" or "Printers" sections. I'll release soon a version that, at least, doesn't choke on these (the original purpose of SMBUp was to allow people to re-share their old shared drives for mediacenters, which are usually as read-only and guest-enabled).

Keep in mind that SMBUp uses the macports samba installation, so the underlying installer works to automate that installation in tutorials that suggest it, even if you don't use SMBUp itself any more after that.

maybe silly question, but how can I find information about smb.conf... what  patch to file and what type of chmod it shoud be ?

hola Eduardo: te consulto por lo siguiente, instale el smbup en el lion de mi mac mini para poder reproducir en el google tv con la aplicacion gtvbox que solo lee redes samba y si bien puedo ver las carpetas compartidas, cuando intento abrirlas me dice  cannot open the source o algo asi.

que debo configurar en el smbup para poder abrir las carpetas?

I have tried so many workarounds with FTP and SMB and none of them seem to hold too long.  I just installed SMBUp and it doesn't work in any scenario with our Xerox Workcentre 7328 connect to our LION Server (10.7.3) for network scanning.

In my xerox control panel settings:

- I've tried changing to port 445

- adding the full path listed in SMBUp in the Xerox control panel

- had Lion Server's smb sharing turned off and on

- not using a document path and only using the share name

- toggled off and on the Read only option

And all combinations of the above.  Nothing works.  This is so frustrating.

Been beating my head flat on this for about an hour now and have a fix (that works for me anyway). Have a client who's Macbook Pro just died, and when they (Apple) fixed it we lost the ability to browse to their company Win2008R2 File server. We had previously been able to access using the command-K smb://<ip address>/share which brought up a username and password prompt. Post laptop fix it just flashed a 'trying to conect' window which disappeared without connecting or prompting for un/pw. Fix was to type the smb://<ip address>/share string into Safari - brought up the un/pw prompt and upon entering the Active Directory (AD) credentials opens Finder and the network shares. Used that a LONG time ago troubleshooting a Mac connection to a Windows share via VPN... Hope this helps!

Also - ran into the issue where with some AD users authentication would fail, even though we'd verified username and changed password to known/good. Fix for that (as mentioned somewhere else here) was to create a new macuser AD account and use it to access the Windows shares.

After Reading all 5 pages of posts - I have to say that it appears everyone is beating a dead horse. Copier companies are learning quickly that they must support Mac OS X more than they do. But instead of messing with SMB and FTP - which is a pain to setup and work-around, I use a much easier way to do the forwarding. My setup:

• 16 iMac's, macbooks and mac air's using OSX Lion
• Mac Mini Server - Lion and Lion Server.
• Canon iR2535i

So after upgrading to OS X Lion and finding out the Canon salesman lied about compatibilty, I tried using FTP and setting up in Terminal - which would not work. So I ditched the whole idea and came up with a brilliant idea if I don't mind tooting my own horn. Here's what I did:

1. Load Dropbox on your server - or a Mac that you will setup shares on. Login to have all dropbox content loaded to that computer.
2. Go to www.sendtodropbox.com and setup by signing into your Dropbox account. Afterwards, they will give you an email address for forwarding all your attachments to.
3. Login to your copier web interface and setup your job forwards (such as fax forwarding) to forward via email. In a Canon iR, you have to setup an address entry. By using sendtodropbox, you only need to create one entry as you will be sharing one folder (called attachments) on your LAN for whomever you want to have access to it. Use the email address sendtodropbox gave you. If you don't have your SMTP setup in your copier - now would be a good time.
4. Now go to your server and setup local shares for the ATTACHMENT folder as that is where all the forwarded email attachments will be saved to. Share it with whichever users you want. Then open that share on the individual Mac computers using GO--> and entering the IP address the shared ATTACHMENT folder is on. Use your login credentials to access
5. You can put an alias on the desktop for quicker access. That's it - you now have fast forwarding setup via a little utility called sendtodropbox.com. Boo-yeah!

Oh yeah - In Essayons case - just Scan To Email and use the email address sendtodropbox.com gave you... same concept applies!

You could also do this:

- Install Lion Tweaks, turn on FTP service

- Setup share on Lion Server

- Configure printer/scanner/fax to use shared folder (ours is a xerox workcentre 7328)

or if that doesn't work

- Install Lion Tweaks, turn on FTP service

- Create shared folder on server admin account (let's say - NetworkScans)

- Configure printer/scanner/fax to use NetworkScans folder)

- Attach folder action to NetworkScans that move files to fully shared folder (outside of server user account) that everyone can access

This is realy ******* me off. Nine months now and again mac users are ignored.

Internet sharing = Flaky

SMB = ***** (i.e. I can't connect to my €900 ReadyNAS from my mac, but can from my PC, Linux & Android tab)

finder = Flaky

Safari = Bloatfest

Address book = 50 / 50

iCal = Don't even get me started about trying to sync with my iPhone and meetings being dropped.

But at least we have a nice new shiney iPad to worry about.

Can Apple take its collective head out of its posterior and get this fixed, another three hours and countless resets and still nothing. It was working this morning, now its not.

Do they really care about the mac anymore?

10.6.8 is very dependable and a solid server product, I have 4 different, 10.6 servers in production and using Open Directory as out primary authentication. Works great!

10.7.X is a flakey and crap, do not depend on it. It has failed at some point on 3 different servers we currently have in production (will soon be replacing these with linux boxes).

I did all my testing and implimentation planning on 10.6 and was confidant with the product, when 10.7 came on on the new server hardware I figured it would be the same. IT IS NOT. I tried to use 10.6 on the new Apple hardware and that does not work. So now we are back to using linux as our servers until Apple can put out a reliable server product again.

Is there anyway we can see other network smb shares in the Finder sidebar? They all disappear when SMBup (Macports) is turned on.
