After having upgraded my operating system to 10.6.8, I 've also needed to upgrade several third party applications in order to be compatible with Snow Leopard. In the past  I've always run Disc Utility to repair permissions after I've downloaded any new applications. The same applies still. However, since installing Snow Leopard, my system seems to hiccup quite a bit, and Repair Disc Permissions in Disc Utility takes roughly 15-20 minutes to complete, and the items listed are always the same. Below is my log. Can anyone suggest why the repairs take so long, and why the items listed below apparently don't remain repaired?

My thanks in advance.

    Have you tried Booting from the MacOS disk and repairing the permissions and the disk also?

    We all get these repeating messages. They are not errors, just a symptom of Apple not having updated the Permissions database. Stop repairing Permissions. Once is enough. It is mostly a useless exercise. If you see the message at the end "Permissions Repair complete," then that's all you need to know.

    Permissions repair will only affect anything installed with the native OS X Installer.app (and touches nothing in your User.) Third party apps should not be using it and therefore, unless they are "rogue" applications, badly written, which start messing with native OS X apps, Permissions repair shouldn't be doing a thing for them.

    Also do not do a Permissions repair booted from the install disc. This will really screw them up.

    WZZZ...

    Your comments and advice sound reasonable, and I appreciate your input. I did not realize however that permission repairs only applied to native OSX apps and not third party apps. I had mistakenly assumed that after installing anything in my system that it would be a good idea to repair permissions as a safeguard.

    Thanks too, for the helpful link.

    Additionally, see

    <http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2963>

    <http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1452>

    for more details on permissions and troubleshooting them. This paragraph (from HT2963) is unambiguous

    "If you have modified the contents of the folder /Library/Receipts, the Repair Permissions feature won't work as expected. Repairing permissions requires receipts for Apple-installed software. Additionally, the utilities only repair Apple-installed software and folders (which does not include users' home folders)."

    Also, WZZZ's warning about repairing permissions while booted from the install disc is very important. As this excerpt (from HT1452) reads

    "When possible, disk permissions should be repaired while started up from a Mac OS X volume (hard disk) that contains Mac OS X, instead of a Mac OS X installation disc."

    However, this should not be confused with re-setting (not repairing) the Home folder permissions, which, in Mac OS X v10.6, can be done with the Reset Password utility while booted from the install disc.

    Unfortunately, like forcing to shut down your system by brute force instead of an elegant Shut-Down from the Apple menu, you just don't always have a choince in the matter.

    "When possible, disk permissions...-"

    Quite right, but if you can't boot from your usual startup volume and run Disk Utility from it, you have much bigger fish to fry than repairing permissions, methinks. And if daily you have to boot from the install disc to repair permissions, then something is very rotten indeed in the state of Denmark.

    fane_j...

    the pandora's box involved in booting from the install disk to repair permissions is understood, and resetting the home folder permissions seems an unnecessary avenue for me to take. as long as things are working correctly, i don't care if it takes disc utility 2 hours to repair permissions. the reason i ran it in the first place was simply to insure that all was in order after my upgrade. particularly in light of my system starting to hiccup after the install.

    at this point i'll leave well enough alone, although as i'm writing this, i've found that everytime i open my web browser, an old manfred mann recording (oddly enough) starts playing and continues until i can't stand it anymore. how weird is that? and i'm not making this up! it's not even in my itunes. it's like my macbook is suddenly possessed. what do you think of that?

    btw --- those links you provided were very helpful. thanks.

    There may be a misunderstanding here. I didn't say that you needed to reset your Home folder permissions. In fact, I see no indication that you ever needed to repair permissions. IMHO, you've been wasting your time with that.

    as long as things are working correctly, i don't care if it takes disc utility 2 hours to repair permissions.

    Perhaps it's my turn to misunderstand, but the reason why repair permissions shouldn't be done from the install disc has nothing to do with how long it takes, but with the fact that the required files (receipts) aren't present. At any rate, once more, I see no reasons to suspect that your problem has anything to do with permissions.

    what do you think of that?

    That you need to check the browser's settings.

    thanks.

    You're very welcome.
