Q: US TAX ID - The Big Dilemma

Well... I`m from Bulgaria and want to publish books with Ibooks Author. I read everything for IRS and ITIN ect, contact with four US tax consulting companies and US embassy here, But I need to fly to London or Paris to local office of IRS where accredited notary make a copy of my ID card...

I just want to sell e-book in Apple store, I no want to start a company or business in US or something...

I know how for 90% from of you that's is not a problem because you a US citizens, but for international authors this is nightmare :|

Once again, please not delete my post I know for other posts here for US TAX ID, but if Anyone can give ANY suggestion for easy way to get this Tax ID and publish book please say it. Thanks.

p.s. I perfectly know this is the law, but the procedure is so complicated and very close to impossible...

I'm afraid there is no way for us to verify if our EINs are "permanent".

I will fill in my EIN again exactly two weeks after the date I've got it.

You received your EIN on January 30th Nick, so tomorrow is your day. Good luck!

It seems that you're familiar with the whole process buildyo...

I'm from Germany and I also want to publish books via the iBookstore.

What about this other form, besides SS-4... this W8BEN or something like that. Do you also need to file this with Apple? And if so, where am I supposed to send the form?

From the discussion it looks like getting the EIN is not the problem. I just don't get what comes next... tax withholding... tax filing in Germany... it's a jungle out there.

Is there a possibility to talk so someone about all this stuff? I am willing to go through the whole process... but where do I start when I received the EIN?

    Thanks in advance...

I'm in no way familiar with the process. I just do it step by step and can only assume what comes after Apple verified my EIN and accepted me as an iBooks publisher. Since my country, your country and many other countries have agreements with the US to avoid paying taxes twice I expect that Apple wants an W8BEN form from me sometimes later in the process so they are not required to withhold an additional 30% from my royalities for the IRS.

Wether I have to send an annual report to the IRS or if Apple does that for us I don't know. I just don't expect to pay 30% US tax as I have to pay my taxes in my country.

Where do you start when you received your EIN?

Wait two weeks then sign up as an iBooks publisher.

Hi, Buildyo23, may I ask how long you got your fax reply by mail after you fax it? If fact, I wonder if anyone actually got an EIN sent back by fax? Or they just mail it?

I faxed the SS-4 form on January 22 and received the letter with the EIN on February 6 although they promise a fax reply within 4 days.

    Buildyo23: thanks, everything went allright.

I re-submitted my data (my EIN) to Apple after 2 weeks, and they have been accepted.

    Thanks again

You need a SS-4 form to apply for an EIN. Check IRS website for details.

One month after faxing my SS-4 form, I finally picked up my phone and called IRS. I answered all the questions (which basically were someone filling out the SS-4 form on the other end of the line for you), and he asked me to wait for a moment. When he finally came back, he asked me if I had applied before. I told hime about the faxed application with no reply. He gave me the EIN from my first application and said I would recieve a mailed reply in 2 or 3 weeks. I thanked him and said goodbye.

Considering my own experience and some other guys' from above, I think fax application is not the way to go. You will just have to pick up your phone and call them. It is the only way to be sure.

Thank you, guys, for all your helps.

    Hi,

yesterday evening I got my EIN 9X-xxxxxxxx

    Thank you very much.

I called the number. After 8 minutes I got an nice women. Her speaking was very fast (for me :-) )

Then I asked to speak a little bit slow for me :-)

Yes an then we followed the Question list like this:

The first question was about my role in my company: Sole Proprietor

    Then

Do you have a Social Security Number (SSN): No.

    Then

    First Name

    Last Name

    Phone number

    Company Name

    Street address

    House number

    City

    Postal code

    Country

She repeated all that I said. And gave me the Fax Number, because I said, that my fax wasnt answered.

So for you all here is the correct number (I hope):

    001-267-99411329

OK after 13 minutes I got my EIN.

Now I am  waiting to get the entry to my Paid Books account.

Thanks a lot for your help here!!

    Kathrin
