Imac keeps giving me the spinning colour ball and freezes during operation, using word, safari and other programs. The mouse pointer still moves but I can't do anything and have to shut the computer down. I've checked the Activity monitor and it seems fine. Page ins: 2.7GB. Page outs: 0. Any suggestions? It keeps making a noise as if it is labouring.

Run the Apple hardware test to see if it picks up any hardware issues: . You didn't indicate what operating system you're running. If prior to Lion, the directions are towards the end of the Apple note.

    Also, see this:

How old is the iMac? Late 2006 / 2007 models can suffer with overheating causing the graphics card to create a freeze.

After performing the tests such as BGreg has suggested, might be worth installing iStat Nano to monitor your temps so that you can see if you're getting an overheating issue or not.

I have had exactly the same freezes (pointer still moves) on my late 2006 iMac, however since installing SMC Fan control and upping the fan speeds a bit, the freezes have stopped (for now...).

(you'll note at the end of that thread there are some links to other solutions)

My post maybe irrelevant to such a new iMac. I was under the impression the overheating issue didn't effect the models so much from 2008 onwards.
