Trully saying I would like to see whole bunch of supported protocols in iChat (or Messages/iMessage) like - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_instant_messaging_protocols + many others... I still can't understand Apple politics around this problem, they many years ago could be able to make it. For example I am using Mac for 5 years and I have never used iChat, what I did once - is just opened it, checked that it doesn't support nothing (no Skype, no ICQ, no MSN, no QQ etc)  and closed it.

    Hi RJ in WI,

Long time no see around here.

This has been out there a while  (There are other sites that list similar instructions)

    http://allforces.com/2005/05/06/ichat-to-msn-through-jabber/

The instructions are for setting up an MSN transport.

The method can be expanded for other Transports.

It will only allow Text chatting.

In iChat 6 a Plug-in allows Login to Yahoo (Yahoo name only)  You cannot then add MSN Buddies as the actual Yahoo for Mac can.

Apple said they wanted add-ons to follow this Plug-in method.

The last surviving Add-on in Snow Leopard (Chax) has not yet made it to Lion.

    HI,

As AIM/AOL owned ICQ at one point ICQ was supported by adding the account/Screen Name/ID under an AIM account type.

Since it has been sold Off you can still use iChat to enter a ICQ account as an AIM type but then change the server it would log into.

Adding ICQ and QQ Buddies to an AIM list still seems to work.

Of course if you use MSN  it allows MSN and Yahoo Only.

Skype also connect to nobody else.

Yahoo did the reverse deal with MSN  but you can't add other Buddy types.

Adium and ProteusX did better multiple logins for Mac but stayed at text only.

Trillian which was PC only have expanded into Mac and other platform versions but are still flirting with Audio and Video  (it cost extra for the Pro add-on on Windows and it is not clear if it works for Macs)

It is not Apple that has been insular on this per se.  They all do it.

Jabber/XMMP  and Transports do a better job and connecting Buddies on different services which the above instructions can make use of for iChat but their Video and Audio Protocols (Jingle) are also different  (In fact Google Version of that also does not work with other Jabber Apps).
