When ever I try to use one of the text books that I've purchased iBooks becomes un-usable. I have to perform serveral hardware resets of my iPad to get things working again.
I've purchased books that I can't even use. I've converted over to just purchasing ebooks and until iBooks 2 was released I just loved it. I have 512 e-books on my iPad so it is my main source for reference books and any reading that I do. I'm an IT professional and not being able to have access to my e-book is un-acceptable.
Apple please fix this issue ASAP. You have a great product, please don't blow it.

It happens on the iPad2 also for some of these brandnew multimedia books ; "Life on Earth" is fine, but gets a bit sluggish after having all these videos and animations launched.. Then there was a sample I downloaded , a book that deals with dinosaur/history of earth ( impressive one ! ) - this one crashes whenever I reach a specific page where a 3d model of a dinosaur is presented - I had to restart the device, force ibooks back into Library mode, then start the book from fresh and skip that specific page in the book : the rest of the book did not crash.
So I think it is safe to say that these books are a bit too heavy for the app, either the app or the book is not 100% crash-safe..
Now I played also with "ibooks Author" for OSX, the tool with which these sort of books are being made and when I inserted my own 3d ( .dae files from poser ) into my "book-in-the-making", ibooks author.app warned me that it might not load properly on an iPad . My guess is that these bookmakers have implemented such 3d files, i.e. these ones that "might" cause problems..
the authoring app is just a version 1.0 and has a lot of deficits and is also something that simply did not exist before..
In other words : We surely will see updated Authoring app on OSX together with updated ibooks.app for iOS and also updated books - and I think it is safe to say that these updates come soon.

I'm having a similar but slightly different problem. All iBooks created by someone else (including the sample text books) work just fine. it's the books I create with iBooks Author that are crashing. I'm not using any .dae files but I've made some fairly extensive interactive images (created with Hype and turned into dashboard widget files). I'm pretty sure the crashes started after I put those in but I'm not 100% certain of that.
My crashes of my own books occur on two different iPads, a 1 and a 2.

I'm having a related problem. iBooks Author crashes constantly with a message to the effect that the cause lies in SFWordProcessing plug-in. I have tried the solution suggested for iWeb crashes, i.e., starting in safe mode and then restarting - which apparently restarts the Font database and is supposed, by Apple, to solve that problem, but it doesn't solve this problem.
I am preparing a text for publication and this problem means that I shall probably generate html for Kindle instead.
Come on, Apple - what's the problem here?
