Pop-ups can happen on the internet all the time. It's just that Mac users don't have to believe them when they say you have a virus because you don't.

I just laugh at those goofy pop-ups and close them (and feel a little pity for Windows folks who have to worry about them).

Don't download stuff unless you're very sure you need and/or want it. There are no viruses that affect the modern versions of Mac OS X, but it's possible to get malware (such as trojans) by downloading stuff from suspicious or unknown sources.

When in doubt, come here and ask.

My suggestion once you get rid of MacKeeper is to install GlimmerBlocker. It will prevent the popups so you will not be tempted again. Besides that I find my experience on the web to be lot less obnoxiuos with out all those popups.

I've always found the people on the Apple forum to be extreamly helpful and knowledgable. I would listen to the advise given.

    To add my pennies worth..

I have to say that in the past I have downloaded these so called cleanup SW programs, some expensive and claiming the world., Springclean, Onyx, Diskwarrior etc etc..

Sooner or later I've ended up with a catastrophic problem with my OS which caused me to re-install. These issues happened immeadiatly after using the utility so I can confidently blame them. Now I stay away.

I'm not an expert but I suspect that each time OSX has an update that these utitlities are not keeping in step quick enough, and they end up writing to locations that have changed etc. (Just guessing here)

The old saying "if it's working don't break it" is very true!!

The only one that I would take exception with that you included in your list is DiskWarrior. So far that is the one tool that has always worked for me whenever I used it. It has never caused me any problems.

Sorry to say Allan but Disk Warrior totally hosed my OSx. This happened after using Disk Warrior with no trouble at all for quite a while and then one day.. Bam!.. I was getting kernal panics etc.

Re-installed OSX and everything was fine. This was on Tiger and i had a G5 Power Mac. So it was a while ago. But never had the nerve to try it again!

I agree, it was highly recommended to me, and worked well until it killed my G5. I'd be interested to hear the current feedback. Maybe I'll get an update if they have improved things!

With the kernel panics, I suspect that was another problem besides DiskWarrior. It could be an innocent bystander.

I think DiskWarrior was not the problem, there was another cause.

Okay, here's what you do. Use boot camp to run windows, and then get McAfee Security 2010 (cause it's cheaper) After you know you won't get viruses, you hackintosh your bootcamp, and THEN you get MacKeeper. Only then will it be safe to get.

I just have a question. Since I clicked on the mackeeper thing on a pop up and it automatically downloaded, is it going to infect my computer? But I looked this up first to make sure if it was safe or not. I didn't install it or anything, I just quickly put it in the trash can. Will my computer be safe?

If you didn't install it, you're fine.  Even if you did install it, it's not technically malware, but is darn hard to delete and will make a pest of itself.

I started downloading 'MacKeeper' a moment ago (Before I came acress this forum of course). During the download process, the percentge of download was very suspicious, going from 0% to 300% all the way to over 1000% in a few seconds. I magaged to force quit using the keyboard shortcut, as the usual quit wouldn't work.

This has never happened to me and I will never consider anything from ZeoBit.

Anyone else experience this before, please let me know.

    Cheers,

    Mike

Thomas is more or less correct, though whether MacKeeper falls into the technical definition of 'malware' or not is rather irrelevant to the end-user experience, but at the very least you should clean out your browser caches, where MK will more than likely have stuck some little suprises that could cause repeated pop-ups.

In Safari menubar, choose ‘Safari > Reset Safari’. Make sure all the options are checked.

This will not only clear out your caches, but everything else stored by the browser. Don’t worry, it won’t affect your bookmarks, but it will reset your ‘top sites’ and history.

If you use Firefox, go to the menubar, choose ‘Tools > Clear Recent History…’ and choose ‘Everything’. Again, it’ll clear everything out but won’t delete your bookmarks.

Obviously, if you use any other browsers like Opera or something you’ll have to find the same options for those too.

Thanks guys for the support. I have recently also changed from a PC to a Mac only because I heard that it was the best on the market so I wanted the best. I purchased a 17 macbook pro and i love it .. The only thing is though i saw some ads for mackeeper and i was like ok .. let me get it might be program that will have more security. We'll i downloaded it and come to say it messed everything up for me . Everytime i would try to write something or view something on youtube i would get pauses and breaks and i didn't know what i was doing wrong. Here I was thinking it might be my memory but still even at that i still have alot.
