How much storage do you have available?

Sorry I forgot to mention that I have 15 GB storage and 11.6 GB left so it doesn't seem to be a storage capacity issue,
Thanks for asking,

I had the exact same problem. Ipad2, IOS5, 15GB on iCloud, very slow backup which fails after a long time, last backup december 1st. The same with manual backup starts.
What I did: made the backup content as small as possible. I had several GBs of books and magazine in FileApp, iBooks and apps like these. I chose not to be backed up these. The backup size was much more smaller than the remaining space on my iCloud account. I didn't sart the backup manually, instead I waited for the automatic backup. Checked after 3 hours and the backup was finally made succesfully.
One more thing, it's important for automatic backup to start to load the battery, lock the screen (and be on wifi).
I suspect that this issue is connected to too big backup size BEFORE buying the 10+ GBs. The iCloud account or the iPad itself doesn't recognize all the space you have in iCloud if you - at some point in the past - tried to upload too much data.

Thanks for your reply. I've tried to what you suggested to keep the back up as "light" possible but it didn't work, after several hours and when the progress bar was almost full, the backup stopped. Message: there was a problem completed the backup, please try again later...
Actually I've wasted money purchasing 10 extra GB of storage for nothing...it's so frustrating and Apple technical support must be the worst in the world, they're absolutely clueless (and useless)
Thanks anyway, I'm glad it worked for you.

I have the same problem on my ipad 3. I have reduced my backup to practically nothing, deleted my backup, and yet it still takes hours. Even then it never finishes and tells me the backup failed with no explanations. It worked fine 2 weeks ago. My iPhone seems ok.
Help me someone.

After trying out every suggestion, I determined that it is A ROUTER PROBLEM. Try resetting the router. It worked for me.
