Q: MacBook Pro: Trackpad settings reset after restart.

Hey guys,

Was just wondering if anyone could shine some light on the problem I'm experiencing at the moment.

For some unknown reason, my MBP (current model, with latest firmware) keeps 'forgetting' the trackpad settings I choose every time I restart/turn it off and on.

The issue lies with the settings for enabling 'One Finger' settings, specifically 'Tap to Click', 'Dragging', and 'Secondary Click - Bottom Right Corner'. I'll tick the settings, but after a reboot the boxes are unchecked again.

This is pretty annoying as I'm having to change the settings every time I turn my computer on.

Does anyone have a solution to my issue?

Many thanks,
Luke

Thanks for the suggestion, but I'm sorry to report that it didn't help. I'm not even sure that the "palm reset" works on my MBP 8,1. It's possible that I'm not doing it correctly (along the lines of "you're holding it wrong" ). Are you supposed to get some sort of notification window if you've successfully reset your trackpad? I never saw one despite numerous attempts at palming the trackpad. Then, just to check, I rebooted my MBP and lost my trackpad settings again.

I have the same problem on my MPB 13-inch early 2011 after upgrading to Lion.  It forgets the settings under the "more gestures" tab after restart, boot or opening lid.

Is there nothing we can do?

I've been having this same problem on and off ever since I purchased my mac, but now it seems to be happening with every reboot.

Also, my brightness preferences keep changing (but that's started happening since I've been using Midnight, a brightness changing app)

    I've never used MagicPrefs.

Hopefully someone finds a better solution to this.

I tried the palm restart. To no avail.

Same problem over here. I am running MacOSX 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard) on MacBook Pro from 2009. Annoying as ****. I have never heard of MagicPrefs so I doubt that that's the problem. However, the same issue has also been discussed elsewhere on this forum (https://discussions.apple.com/message/15959713#15959713) so it seems to be a common bug. But surely it can't be that hard to fix. Come on Apple!

Hi, I used to have this problem.  I upgraded to Lion several weeks ago and this problem has disappeared for me.  It must have been a bug with the way preferences were saved in Snow Leopard.

I re-installed Lion from scratch and the problem is fixed.  I think it could be due to something going wrong during the upgrade to Lion.

I'm also having this problem intermittently.  Seems like a lot of people are reporting this - any thoughts?  One possible culprit I thought of is the "better touch tool" system prefs panel.  Thoughts?

I think it's just an issue with OS 10.6.8. I never had it before the update, and I don't have any system prefs so it can't be that.

Bumping the subject, have been having the same issue on m MBP from 2010 OS 10.6.8.

Didn't have it the first year or so, but for the past few months I started loosing the 'one finger; tap to click and secondary clock' settings after restarting. To me it also occurs randomly, very annoying!

Won't be upgradiong to Lion soon, so dear Apple: I need a FIX!

    Second that

    MBP8,2  10.6.8 same problem.

I would hate spending a week or two reinstalling everything because of this glitch.

Can't be that hard to fix?

I'm having the same horrid problem with the trackpad preferences . ..

I am not using anything like magicpref . .. but I am using

    OS 6.8 like everyone else . .

It seems to usually occur when I reboot but sometimes spontaniously when I am working . .

    GRRRRR

Same problem here. I've never heard of Magicprefs, not running Bootcamp or Windows and while my trackpad tap-to-click used to disable (seemingly) at random, it's now with every reboot. Very (very) annoying. Apple... HELP!

Same problem here. Randomly, the trackpad resets itself upon reset or shut down/start. Very annoying, I didn't expect such a glitch from such an expensive laptop. Why is there not any response from an  Apple technician here? Do we have to individually go to Apple stores? It would save them so much time and resources if they posted advice to deal with (most of) us.
