Same issue. It works when you restart your computer, but after you close the lid and reopen (disconnect the internet connection) it won't log back in. Anything on how to get it to work without restarting?

I was able to get it to work.
First I signed in with my appleID on an iDevice (iPhone) and sent a couple messages. I then uninstalled the messages app on my mac and reinstalled it. It connected and worked after that.

Same issue here. I've tried scsc_brianc's solution but it didn't work. Also tried others described in other threads on this issue, including using Google's DNS, but no joy. Very frustrating.

Actually I am behind a corporate fire wall and an OpenDNS proxy but this has never been an issue with any application. IChat, Skype, Messenger etc all of the work just fine...

A bit like the fact that an Apple ID gets you into Apple Discussions but you need to set up an Alias I am fairly sure FaceTime needs you to tell that the Apple ID is going to be used for FaceTime.
I Signed in with my iCloud name and had no problems.
What sort of Apple IDs are we talking about here ?
For instance at one time you could list a confirmation/Password recovery email address that was not current and Apple did not really check on these.
Now they do.
IN the Apple ID support site you are ebing asked more often to Verify any email used as an Apple ID.
Please, if posting Logs, do not post any Log info after the line "Binary Images for iChat"

Thanks for the above response.
I am using my Apple ID [email and passowrd], the same as for iTunes, iCloud, and Mail. I have synced my iPhone and iMAC and both are set to the correct ID.
I have also uninstalled Messages twice and of course reinstalled. Still having the same issue.
In regards to your statement "I Signed in with my iCloud name.." did you mean your Apple ID [email and password]?

The AppleID account system operates a bit differently now.
When iCloud went into effect, Apple was encouraging people to unify multiple accounts and account types. Many people did, and some didn't (or the other way around.) There are security reasons why you may not want to.
- Accounts can now have associated e-Mail addresses. And these e-Mail addresses can be verified (for better security) or not.
- Messages ∫Beta requires that an e-Mail address be associated with the Apple ID you want to use.
So, I'll bet that you actually have more than one Apple ID. And I'll bet that the e-Mail address you prefer is associated with another other ID or that you have no e-Mail address available on that Apple ID account.
When you enter your Apple ID in Messages, and the gear is spinning it means that it can not automatically associate and e-Mail address and it is waiting for you to key one in.
But, if an e-Mail address that you attempt to use is already associated with another Apple ID you will get a notice that says it is unable to verify & use because it is already associated.
- So, go to appleid.apple.com log–in (as manage your account) with any new & old accounts that you can remember and see what e-Mail addresses are associated with each of them.
Also, occasionally when initially installing the Messages ∫Beta, you may have to power down your system a second time after you attempt to set up the account. This seems to be a hang, as it is waiting for a valid e-Mail address to be entered.

Unfortunately none of your assumptions is valid in my case. Checked my appleid, everything is fine. I am using all ICloud / Itunes / IPhone etc features with this validated email address and pwd without any problem.
Yesterday out of curiosity I tried FaceTime on my MacBook Pro (I use it normaly only on my phone) but generated the same sindromes without logging in....
I also changed my password in the meanwhile and got my appleid verified again. Nothing helps.
