Q: Mac App Store - Offline installation

Hi,

I've purchased some apps from the Mac App Store. Now I have a second Mac that has no internet connection and I'm not going to give it one because for safety reasons. But that seems to be a problem regarding the Apps I purchased.

If I copy the apps to this other computer and try to start it, nothing happens.

How can I activate those Apps on my "offline computer"?

Best regards,

Christian

What version of Mac OS X is on the other computer. Apps require a minimum of Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard and some require higher versions

    Anyone?

It should be possible to transfer software I paid for to another Mac without forcing me to establish a internet connection, shouldn't it?

    Christian...

Yes. You can backup your purchases to an external hard drive or a thumb drive then install on the other Mac without the need for an internet connection.

    Thanks for your answer!

But the problem is: I did exactly that. I copied it to an external drive from the first Mac and then transfered it to my second machine. Put the App in the application folder and tried to start the app. But nothing happens. Neither does it start, nor does it prompt a dialog asking for my Apple ID (which indeed wouldn't make sense, since this Mac does not have an internet connection!)

What is the app in question? Simple apps with drag & drop installation should be able to be installed on another qualifying Mac in this manner. But the few more complicated apps that have an installer cannot be installed on another Mac this way. You need to back up the installer and use it to install the app on a qualifying Mac.

Actually every App I purchased. To give an example: FoldersFactory. All the Apps I'm talking about are Apps without an installer. And as I said I can copy those Apps without problems, but they wont start on the other Mac.

Then perhaps you have a permissions issue. Have you used the Disk Utility to repair the permissions on the Mac to which you have transferred the apps?

The next step would be to create a test user account on the Mac and see if the apps will open in the test account.

I have the same problem. If I backup an app and then restore it to the same Mac, it can run. However, I I backup an app and then restore it to other Mac, it will not run (double click but nothing happens). I did try with several Macs.

I'd like to have offline installers of some apps from App Store in order to avoid compatibility problems of future app updates or the case when apps move from free to paid.

This is a dead 1.5+ year old thread, it would be better to post your own topic in your own thread.

I found this thread by using a search engine (I don't remember Bing or Google). I tried to find a solution for this problem but I couldn't. I decided to accept the fact that Apple doesn't want me to have offline installers with App Store.

Anyway, thank you for your reply.
