I'M  TRYING TO SYNC SONG/PATTERNS FROM THE AKAI XR20 TO LOGIC PRO 9. I HAVE A MIDISPORT UNO MIDI/USB CONNECTED.  WHEN I RECORD, THE TRACK IS SHOWING THAT THE SONG FROM THE XR20 IS TRANSMITTING TO LOGIC.  BUT I CAN NOT HEAR IT.  AND I CAN'T HEAR IT WHEN I PLAY IT BACK. CAN SOMEONE BE OF SERVICE?

Apparently, you are recording MIDI into Logic, which means only Note information (Gate, Velocity, Pitch, etc.) is being recorded. It's like a score on paper, no sound, just a description of how it must be played back. Now, if you want this to be played back by the XR-20, you should connect MIDIsport's MIDI Out jack to XR's MIDI In socket. Logic will then send MIDI notes back into the drum-machine and it will reproduce the drum part according to what it receives. Also, XR should be set up to receive MIDI, if you want this to work. Note: make sure MIDI In jack is disconnected from XR's MIDI Out socket, otherwise you will get a MIDI loop, which won't sound good.

If you want to use a drum plugin, such as Ultrabeat or EXS24 to reproduce the recorded pattern using other sounds, you should load a software instrument into the Input slot (must be above the channel strip volume fader). After loading the instrument plugin there, you can choose a drum patch or create your own (for example, by loading drum samples into the plugin or by sampling your XR's sounds into Logic and then loading them into plugin).

I'm confused.  It sounds like you're telling me that the only way I can hear what I recorded to Logic, is by sending it back to the XR.  My goal was to record the patterns on Logic, edit them, and then transfer the music onto a disc, with the original sounds. I think you're telling me that I can sync the sounds from the XR into Logic. Do I need a plugin for that?  Thanks for being helpful.

MIDI has nothing to do with sound.

MIDI is performance data, what note is played, how long the note is held, how fast (velocity) the note was played...etc..etc.

However, you should be able to do what you want by playing the recorded MIDI sequence back into the AKAI and recording the output as an audio file which can be burnt to CD. If you want the AKAI sounds they have to be recorded as audio, MIDI is only a note trigger, (it's more than that but in your case it's mainly a note trigger).

So you're saying to record the sequence into Logic, send it back through the AKAI XR20 for the original sound, and record it unto a CD as an audio file from the XR20? I want to master the song while in Logic. To hear the song while editing and with the right configuration, I should be able to hear the sounds from the XR20 and an audio output device from the XR20.

No, I'm saying record the MIDI output of the AKAI into Logic just as you're doing open the piano roll and edit away until you have the sequence sounding the way you want. When editing and playing back the sequence the sound will come from the AKAI, remember, MIDI is not sound, it's only data that triggers a MIDI sound source. The AKAI is the sound generator. After the sequence is edited to your liking record the audio out of the AKAI into Logic, then you can master the audio and burn it to a CD.

You need to read the manuals to get a clear grasp of what you're trying to do.

Thanks for your response. I'm in the process of reading the manual.  I'm having trouble setting up Logic to send sound back through the AKAI XR20.  I'm using headphones at the moment.  How should my Logic preferences be set up to send sound back thru the AKAI. Also, I'm unclear about Midi thru and when to use it.

Logic won't be sending "sound" back through the AKAI, it'll send MIDI data back to the AKAI in order to trigger the AKAI to produce sound.  But if you want to master the sound of what the AKAI is actually producing itself, you have to set up a way to record audio the "traditional" way to get the audio from the AKAI back into Logic.  Don't worry about MIDI Thru, you don't need it for this.

Try this walkthrough I drew up for another user: https://discussions.apple.com/message/17908513#17908513 Just substitute your MIDIsport and AKAI wherever it says "MidiMan" and "DX7", the process is still the same.

This method uses the "External Instrument" plugin.  Essentially, it's combining a MIDI (which is data messages and contains no audio) channel with an audio channel.  The MIDI part sends the MIDI data (what notes to play and when and how loudly, etc.) to your AKAI, and then your AKAI receives that data and uses it to trigger the built-in sounds.  At this stage, you just need to get the audio produced by the AKAI back into an audio channel in Logic via your sound card or audio device or however you've made your setup to record an audio source.  Make sense?

I have an akai xr20 as well and I had the same problem. When you make a new track on the left hand side of the screen you have a small gray area appear. You'll see some boxes click on the blank box abover stereo out. Click on external instrument - stereo. Make sure you select your input, I have mine on 1-2. Your Akai XR20 drum is now connected and you can listen to your drums and record directly from it!

    Cheers
