Q: My trackpad is acting strangely

My trackpad is acting strangely and it seems some of my preferences have changed. I check them in system settings>trackpad but I when I try something like a three finger swipe it starts selecting instead of swiping to the full screen app or dashboard. Also dont seem to be able to swipe up for mission control. It just selects and I restarted etc

If you check the 3 Finger drag option in System Preferences > Trackpad > Point & Click, then all other 3 finger options are automatically changed to 4 finger.   Try using four finger swipe up/down left/right and see if that works.   You can uncheck 3 finger drag and reset the other options to 3 finger if you prefer.

There is a description below the gesture that indicates the number of fingers and a little down arrow next to the description.  Click the down arrow for options.
