Is there a download for US holidays for 2012 available or a setting in iCal that will upload them automatically?

If you Google ical holidays 2012 you will find many calendar subscriptions.  I've tried a few, and my favorite US holiday calendar is here:

    http://www.mozilla.org/projects/calendar/holidays.html

The US version is at the bottom of the page.  It includes the regular holidays (Christmas, Easter, Thanksgiving, etc), and lesser known holidays (Constitution Day, Flag Day, Parents Day, etc.)  Add the weblink to your Subscriptions under the Calendar menu.

You can't enter subscriptions on the iPhone calendar like you can with iCal on the Mac.  Instead, what you must do is sync your iPhone with iCal on your computer using iTunes to transfer the holidays now on iCal into the calendar app on your iPhone.

To do this, connect your iPhone to your Mac, start iTunes and go to the Info pane.  In the Calendar section, the new holiday subscription should be shown.  Check the box and tell iTunes to sync this calendar.  After syncing, it should show up on your iPad.

This works fine - but this has far too many holidays than I care to have on my calender. Is there some way I can delete  a few of them ?

Which calendar are you talking about?  The one I posted above?  I do not think you can make changes to that calendar. I seem to recall trying and it didn't work.

Apple has a calendar on its webpage, but it is somewhat old. It contains fewer holidays, but use at your own risk.
