To "Stevejobsfan0123" and several other people:

No sarcasm please!  There is enough lively discussion on this site to make for interesting reading.

Perhaps I used the wrong word when I wrote "app" in my earlier message.  There were 2-3 medical training programs that I wanted to download and use on my iPad so they would be more convenient to read.  In each case, the programs called for a Flash player.  I discovered right away that I could not download the Adobe Flash player on my iPad.  It would be very convenient to see these video clips on my iPad.  I will try downloadinig HTML5 onto my device.

By the way, there are many of us who fall somewhere on the spectrum between "geeks" and cyber novices.  I think I know my computer quite well and I'm learning about the iPod and iPad and so on.  When we ask a question about these programs, we appreciate straightforward, thoughtful answers.

Why can't Apple and Adobe get together on this?  Can't we all just get along?

Mary, if you had read any of the comments posted in this thread, you would have had the answer to the questions and no need to post them all over again. They have been answered many times over here. The first device to use iOS was the iPhone which shipped in JUN 2007, followed by the first iPod Touch which shipped in SEP 2007. They shipped with no Flash support because Adobe did not care enough about Apple products to actually develop a mobile version of Flash for iOS that worked. That was 4 and a half years ago that iOS devices have not had Flash. The press has made a stink about that loud and clear for all 4.5 years everytime a new iOS device is introduced.

My 92 year old grandmother who lives in a small village in Hidalgo State, Mexico and speaks no English knows that iOS devices do not have Flash. It shocked the heck out of me the first time I heard her mention that in passing when a number of us were discussing getting iOS devices a few years ago as Christmas gifts.

Adobe has never respected Apple, who gave Adobe their start in the computer industry, enough to devote the resources to developing Flash correctly for Apple products. Back in 2007 while Windows Flash had four full-time experts developing the technology, Adobe assigned one part-time developer, with expertice in another area, to Flash development for Apple. Apple has no interest in Adobe's shoddy commitment to its products to drag down iOS devices. Folks cry & moan enough when something does not work perfectly for them as it is. It would be worse had cycle sucking, battery draining Flash been included on iOS devices.

If they are not available in the App store, they are not for the iPad.

html5 is not something you download.

It a standard web content is written to.

Flash programs? What Adobe Flash app? There IS a Flash-less app for almost everything that uses Flash, at least in my experience.

Apple advertises that "there's an app for that" for just about everything you can think of for the iPod or iPad.  However, when I tried to use several programs on my iPad that required the Adobe Flash application, they didn't work.  The note on the Adobe website said that Apple had not provided the source code (or whatever) so the company could adapt Flash to the iPad.  It's unrealistic and unreasonable for the consumer to test every potential use of the iPad before buying it.  Why can't Apple and Adobe get together on this?  Can't we all just get along?

The main reason that apple does not and will not support flash has nothing to do with personal relationship issues with Adobe. Flash is one of the most bloated plugins and when they tested it when they were building the original iPhone it killed the battery life. Instead of supporting it and then having to explain to people why their iOS devise battery only last 20 minutes instead of 14 hours they decided to not support it. Not to mention the common problem reported to apple from consumers is around flash crashing browsers and flash bogging down their computer.

Every attempt by other companies to include flash has not worked. Adobe even admits its not appropriate on tablets and phones and stopped working on it all together. So even if some android and Windows devices come supporting flash in the future Adobe wont even be supporting it …

I can no longer use Adobe to view videos put on Facebook by friends. It used to work but the upgrade won't work on my older system so now I have an iPad 2 I was stoked to have it again but no! Still not able to and what's worse. can't even do my crossword puzzles! Such a nuisance! Someone has to get their heads together and sort it out, maybe Apple could pay Adobe for the use?

Pay for the use of what?

    Haven't you been listening?

Adobe has not been able to write a version for iOS yet. They have now given up on all versions of Flash for all mobile platforms. So Flash is dead for iOS.

Use the Facebook app, NOT the Facebook website.

THANKS ALOT MATT! I CAN NOW VIEW ON FACEBOOK THE VIDEOS!!!! Don't know how the Facebook Application made it work, can you explain it please Matt? I am not completely dumb when it comes to tech stuff but this is all a bit confusing to say the least.

IF YOU REQUIRE IT FOR FACEBOOK DOWNLOAD THE FACEBOOK APPLICATION AS OFFERED IN YOUR IPAD AND AT LEAST YOU CAN VIEW THE VIDEOS ON FACEBOOK. Unfortunately no good at other sites When I bought my 1st iMac desktop I was thrilled with Adobe games online. And now they don't seem to be working together with Apple and I think they all should get their heads together about it and give us full use. If it's a money issue holding back I have to ask don't they make enough $$$ to keep us happy out here in user/buyer land?

Because the Facebook app has been specifically written to work on the iPad. Videos are encoded to a format that is iPad-compatible (probably a codec called H.264). The Facebook website uses Flash encoding, which is not iPad compatible.

You'll find this true of any website which also has a specific iPad or iPhone app - if features don't work on the site, they may well work on the app.

Adobe has ceased flash production for all mobile devices

You have to deal with it on a case by case basis. For example:

    - You like to play a Solitaire game online. It's in Flash.

    - Is there a Solitaire game on the App Store? Why, yes there is. Download and play that.

But for specific games, the developer has to create a version for the iPad. For example, there's now a version of Farmville for the iPad, if you're into that kind of thing.

If there's a specific game that you can't find, post it here, and it's possible that someone knows of an iPad equivalent. Or go to the website and ask the original developers if they're planning such a version.
