Working with keynote, I find that I cannot make any amount of delay in the build sequence to work. No matter how much I add delay in the Advanced window the timing of the bulld stays the same.

Could you provide a little more detail?  What "Advanced window" are you talking about? Do you mean the Build Inspector  > More Options > Build Order list?

A "delay" means the action or build will not start until the time specified has elapsed after the event is triggered. For instance, if you have an object with a build set to automatically happen after a previous build but with a "delay", the object build will wait x seconds before initiating.

This is not the same as build duration, which is the amount of time it takes from the beginning of the event until the event finishes, i.e., how fast the build does its thing.

Which are you trying to do?

I found on odd occasions that if I typed a number into the delay box, sometimes (not everytime) it would not take - but using the up and down arrows to enter the delay worked each time. Other than that, it really should be working for you either way. Worth checking though.
