Put your cursor anywhere in the grey area to the left or right of the title window. Now right click - that should give you a contextual menu that says hide toolbar and customize toolbar. It sounds like you don't have a toolbar at all. If you see no backward & forwardward buttons right under the window widgets (the red, yellow & green lights) then select hide toolbar to uncheck it. If you do have the backward & forward buttons select customize and drag the URL and search boxes into the toolbar.

If you are using Safari 6, it's the new normal - the unified web address and search tool bar.
If you type with word spaces it knows you want to do a search, without word spaces and it thinks you are typing a web address.

Glad to help. If you would still like a separate search field, Firefox still has it, don't know for how long though.

Wow, you are in the Pryenees, do you ever watch the Tour de France, I am a sports person from head to toe. My first preference is tennis but I also watch the Tour. Love it. One day I will get to France, and it had better be soon. Thanks for your help. I ws trying to find how to put that solved my question in order to give you credit and I can't find it. I can download firefox and also have Safari. Is the Firefox for free? Thanks in advance.

Only the creator of the thread can award points - so don't worry, I'm not in it for the money .
Yep, I'm a Brit living in SW France so the Tour features a lot over here. Last year it came less than 2kms past my front door - just a walk away. Great party atmosphere. Good to see a first Brtish win ever this year in the shape of Bradley Wiggins - got a Gold as well at the Olympics. What a man!

If you like it you can export all your bookmarks from Safari as an HTML file and import them into Firefox.
