Feb 29, 2012 1:43 PM in response to Elizabeth Lambertby John Galt,Don't feel foolish and frustrated, Migration Assistant has always been a royal pain.
Make sure the Snow Leopard machine is up to date: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1420
If you tried an Ethernet cable directly from one computer to another and it doesn't work, try a FireWire cable.
If MA still can't see the other computer while connected with FireWire, try booting the Snow Leopard computer in target disk mode - shut down the computer and then hold the T down while starting it. You will know it's in Target Disk mode immediately when you see the lightning bolt symbol.
Make sure to set the Snow Leopard machine to "never sleep" otherwise it may go to sleep, probably when it is 99% finished.
I've always managed to get MA to work but never without a struggle. Don't know why.

Dec 26, 2012 8:47 PM in response to AnaMusicby Cris P,The information at http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4889 does not mention a couple of things that hung me up as I was trying to use the migration assistant.
First, I was migrating from Snow Leoped 10.6.8, and it turns out there is an "update" that must be downloaded with a bug fix for a problem in Snow Leopard. This is independent of the normal software update. See http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1420.
I used the ethernet cable method for connecting the two laptops, because I have ethernet cables at home, but not firewire. After starting migration assistant on both laptops, even after the target found the source computer, the source kept reporting that it was looking for computers. At this point, PRESS CONTINUE on the target, and at that point the source computer finds the target and you can move ahead in the process. In my first few attempts I tried to wait for the two computers to find each before proceeding, but the source computer never found the target.
Regards,
Cris
