Q: My iPad has wrong name. How do I change it?

ON my iPad, I go to Settings>General>About, at the top of the display. It says XXXX's iPad. The XXXX is the guy's name who helped me set up my iPad. How can I change this? Now this may not seem real important except that when I try to download updates to my apps, it asks for my password while displaying THAT GUY's email address!!!

I have gone to iTunes and fixed everything there. In fact, believe it or not, I CAN download new Apps (free ones so far). But no apps can be updated. Help!

    1.  Change iPad name in iTunes.  Select (highlight) the existing name and change it.

    2. It thinks that you are "that guy" and it's asking for his password.  You will NOT be able to update any apps that were obtained using "that guy's" Apple ID unless you know his password.  Period.  All items obtained from the iTunes store are PERMANENTLY associated with the Apple ID that was used to obtain those items.

Can't you tap on that name in the iPad's settings and just change the name there?

Thanks, Demo, but you cannot change that at all. The About section is non-changeable information.

Thanks, Philly_phan. I get it. Looks like I need to re-purchase those apps under my own username/pswd and that ought to fix it. Thank you very much.

You can change it if you are running iOS 5. Maybe you're not running iOS 5.

Read Apple's own tutorial about it here.

iTunes: How to rename your device

    Using an iOS device

    1. On your device, tap Settings > General > About.
    2. Tap the first line, which should display the name of your device.
      iPhone About screen
    3. Rename your device using the on-screen keyboard and tap Done.

This does not work for me, at least not completely. In particular, although I can change the name on the iPad, when I try to connect the iPad to my Mac over Wifi to use CoreMIDI apps, the name that shows up in Audio MIDI Setup for the iPad continues to be the old name.

See instructions at "iTunes and iOS: Change the name of your iPhone, iPad, or iPod" at http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3965, which has instructions for changing the name with the device settings, or with iTunes from a computer to which it is connected.

If that idea (suggested many times in this thread) had worked, I would not have even posted my question!

Well, I can't tell you exactly how I got there, but I found a screen where I was able to change the name in iTunes on my computer for my iPad.  I opened iTunes and connected my iPad.  I tried double clicking and right-clicking on the device name in the left panel in iTunes.  Eventually, I got a screen that shows 7 tabs across the top.  The first one is Summary - it is the one where it showed basic info about my iPad, including the name, capacity, serial number and ios version.  In that top box, I was able to change my device name.  In that same box there is a button to Update or Restore iPad.  The box below that is for Backups.  The box below that has Options for syncing and other things.  I wish I could remember how I got there, but hopefully you will be able to locate this page and do it.  The other 6 tabs say Info, Apps, Music, Movies, TV Shows and Photos.  Good luck.

My original reply posted before I finished and now I can't figure out how to delete/edit it! So here's the finished reply. Sorry for the confusion.

I think I saw that you already got an answer that works for you but I ended up having to do this today so I'm posting this to help anyone else who might have a similar issue!

How to change the name associated with an Apple ID:

    1) In iTunes, select Account from the menu bar at the top of the screen and choose View My Account from the dropdown - it will prompt you for your Apple ID and password

    Screen Shot 2016-09-26 at 3.53.09 PM.png

2)Select Edit at appleid.apple.com (<--- OR GO THERE NOW) and Sign In

    4) Update the details that you would like to change by selecting Edit

    5) Select Done!

    6) Plug your iPad into iTunes and select Account to verify the changes were successful.

If not, log out and back in once more.

If it's still not changed, repeat the edit at appleid.apple.com and make sure to mark done to save the changes.

If it's still not changed after that??? I'm not sure at that point.

    Good luck!

    Other notes:

One might have an incorrect name for a handful of reasons (list not exhaustive)

    - It was set up incorrectly
    - You changed your name

    - You shared an Apple ID with someone at some point
    - Someone gave/sold the device to you and it's still under their details

    - An ****** changed it in to fulfill their lifelong dream of being an ******

If the device is under someone else's Apple ID and they gave/sold it to you or you changed your Apple ID and need to re-log into your device, you'll need to log out and log back in with your correct credentials. Go here for other details: What to do after you change your Apple ID email address or password - Apple Support

Also note, I believe anything purchased or downloaded under the incorrect Apple ID will have to be repurchased/downloaded once you sign in with the correct Apple ID but I'm not 100% on that.
