Mar 1, 2012 9:08 PM in response to sammaestasby jgelements,Test the drive on a computer. If it works, then the drive is fine.
The Time Capsule might not have enough power for the drive, so you may need to get a self-powered hub to attach to the Time Capsule USB port and then plug the drive into the hub.

Mar 1, 2012 9:22 PM in response to sammaestasby LaPastenague,Did you plug the drive into the Mac and format it HFS+.. the TC can only recognise fat 16, fat32 and HFS+ formatted drives.
And then as commented the TC seems to not be able to sufficiently power the USB even for a device like a powered hdd, so it needs a powered hub.. but it is important the hdd type is powered and not one that uses power from USB.

Mar 1, 2012 9:43 PM in response to LaPastenagueby sammaestas,I can read the files on my macbook pro when i connect it directly. I didnt know about the problem with providing power to the drive. I am using a pretty small 1tb drive, do you think that is what the issue is?

Mar 1, 2012 9:49 PM in response to sammaestasby jgelements,It's probably power related, but you can verify it is HFS+ (Mac OS Extended) while it is connected to the Mac (File > Get Info will tell you the volume format after selecting the external HDD). If it isn't HFS+, I haven't seen any official documentation from Apple saying it won't work. Cf. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2421 and http://www.apple.com/timecapsule/specs.html but also https://discussions.apple.com/thread/1431383?start=0&tstart=0.
