Mar 2, 2012 2:34 PM in response to cyaleburby captfred,That's extended desktop mode. Just grab the app and drag it off the right side of the MB screen. It will appear on the TV.
Visit the System Preferences > Displays > Arrangement tab for other options.

System Preferences:Display should detect the external monitor. From there you can try some different refresh rates and resolutions. I ilke to check the "show displays in menu bar" so that I can change resolution in one step.
