time to start archiving - where do i start?

I've got 9038 images on my MBP, in one library. what's the best way of freeing up space and archiving off to DVD?

    Your Library should be an index of all of your work as a photographer.

     

    Libraries can hold hundreds of thousands of Images.

     

    When you need to free space on your system disk because your Library has grown too large, you should convert some (or all) Image's Masters from Managed to Referenced, and put the Referenced Masters on other drives.  This is covered regularly.  Read the User Manual and scan the forum for advice.

     

    As with any data you have on your computer, your Library should be backed-up regularly, and you should regularly test the back-up to make sure it works.

     

    There is no reason to "archive" Images when using Aperture.  Aperture is your archive, as well as your workshop.

    The only time you need to worry about deleting masters is if you delete projects. You can delete anything else, albums or folders and not worry about deleting the master.

     

    EXCEPT in one case if the folder contains projects, in all other cases  you're ok.

     

    Now is the best method to reorganization your library going in and just deleting a bunch of things, I would say no. You need a plan, some idea or where you're trying to get.

     

    So read the many posts of Kirby, then devise an organization that fits your needs.

     

    One other important point, make sure you have a good working backup of your library. Knowing that no matter what you do you can always recover your images is very liberating. You'll be more likely to try out things you would be afraid to try out if you couldn;t recover.

    Aperture is _very_ flexible.  Re-organizing is easy.  Having a plan takes some time.

     

    Time Machine works well.  For any major re-organization of Aperture you should create a stand-alone back-up of your current set-up (Library and any Referenced Masters).  Time Machine is a rolling back-up.  This gives you a (second) fixed back-up, and is easier to restore (if needed).

    TM is good but for this reorganization I'd recommend a vault or a straight copy of the library just before you begin doing your work.

    Without disagreeing with any of the previous advice, please note that the most important archive is a backup of the original images done prior to import into Aperture or any other images management application.
