Hi,

I own a 3GS and my husband just got a 4. We're having an issue with his ringer volume. It will go all the way down to 0 (or 1 bar). I went in an changed his settings so that the buttons can't change the volume (turned it to OFF) and raised the volume through the bar all the way up. Yet today while at work I kept getting his voice mail. He just called and yet again, the volume was at 1 bar so he didn't hear the phone ringing. When he went into settings the button option was still at OFF but the sound bar was all the way down. We can't figure out what is changing the volume. I don't have this issue on my phone (the 3GS). Is there something else we should be checking?

Would love input on this as I'm 7½ months pregnant and we really can't afford missed calls.

iphone 4, iOS 4

To be honest these are the solutions that may or may not work.

First thing I would try is rebooting the phone by holding the sleep/wake button and home button for 15 seconds until you see the white apple logo.

If that doesn't work I would restore from backup. If that doesn't work I would restore as new. If all else fails take it to your closest apple store they may replace the phone for a working one..

Before you go through all kinds of contortions with it. Is it possible that the "-" button is getting pressed and/or held down inadvertantly? Like maybe a case not fitting correctly and pressing the button? I know a co-worker had to trim her case because it was blocking access to the button, it could have caused similar problems. Or how he is carrying it might cause the "-" button to be pressed. I would check this first.

I am having the exact same problem with my 4S which is what brought me here.  I can't figure out any reason.  I don't usually put it in my pocket.  And in my purse, it has its own slot.  And it's happened when my daughter wasn't even home, so I can't blame it on her.  I have no clue, but it happens frequently enough that it's more than annoying.

Hello Fellow Iphone 4 and 4s Users,

I have the exact same issue as described.  However, there is nothing wrong with your phone.  It is your case and the way you use it.  If you are like me, you are using an otterbox or something similar.  Do you frequently end the call and snap the phone back into the holster?  Do you put the phone into the holster with the screen facing your person?  If you answer yes to both of these questions, then you only need to change to one thing.  Press the power button to lock your phone before you put it in the holster.  Why you ask?  If you put the phone into your holster with the screen facing your person, and you forget to lock it, the holster will press the volume button and decrease the volume.

    Thanks,

    Gabe

Trust me, this issue isn't the fault of any "otterbox". The threashold presure to activate the volume down button is significantly higher than what the flimsy case can provide. Plus, I've removed my 4S from the case and still have the issue. My problem has been going on for a couple months and now even Siri is starting to turn on by herself. $600 phone and issues when it's 2 month old, NOT GOOD Apple!

I called Apple about this issue.  Even though I know that it wasn't being manually lowered by the buttons, I did what they told me to do which was to go to settings, sounds, and choose change with buttons to off.  You can set the volume where you want it right above.  That seemed to work.  I didn't have the issue once until I went to the Apple store, and he was helping me with some other issues that I was having, and he had to reset the phone. Either he  or the reset changed the setting back to on for change volume with buttons.  So I had received a call at night before I went to bed and there was sound.  It sat on my desk without moving or being touched.  The next day, the volume was down to zero.   So I checked and found the setting had been changed.  So I changed it back again and again have had no problems.  So I don't know if there's a software glitch or what.  But at least you can try this to see if it helps.

This is BS. My 4G is sitting on my desk. I set the sound and 10 minutes later it is OFF. What the **** good is a phone if it won't ring? Apple has had way to much success, they are getting too sloppy. This is BS. This has NOTHING to do with a case, this is APPLE and APPLE only. I can recall after uploading a new rev level a few months back that this started to happen, before then NEVER once did this happen. Apple needs to get out of the BARS off the alcohol and back on the job.

In support now. First line has no clue, maybe hungover?

Going to supervision. This is totally a joke for a the worlds RICHEST company.

On Friday I brought my phone to the Apple store and they replaced the down volume switch and the problem has been resolved.

This is my 2nd 4G. The first had NO problems until a new software revision was installed. My replacement iPhone is just 2 weeks old. My first iPhone's battery died, but my first iPhone worked just fine up to the time I downloaded a new software Rev that would allow my iPhone to work with the new Lion platform software. My old 4G workd fine before the new software, so for me, my switch is not even a player in the problems I am having.

My wife's phone is now doing the same. She has a 3GS. To me it is clear, Software is the problem. Switches don't fail after a SW revision change.

Just checked it again. Back to 0 on the volume control for Ringer and Alerts. I did not do this. It did it all by it self for the nth time. Also I have "Change with Buttons" OFF so the side volume control should be disabled. Vibrate is ON in case I turn off the ringer with the switch. Don't know why this is happening and Apple is NO HELP, just a bunch of excuses and meaningless stupid proceedures when the fact is their SOFTWARE has a bug. I mean even Alexander Graham Bell knew a phone needed to ring ove a 100 years ago. So Apple needs to ge this nasty problem FIXED and fast.

Just did it again. Ringer reset to no sound maybe for the 20th time today? Phone is just sitting here on my desk. If Paul Revere had an iPhone...............

Did it again. I will reset it for tonight, put it on the charger and pull the head phone jack from the phone. Lets see what happens in the AM. Looks like when the screen blanks, is when this decides to silence the ringer. Again, this is a software bug.

OK through the night. Had Apple Ear Phone unplugged. I will switch to blue tooth head set and see what happens.

OK, my iPhone 4 does exacltly what everyone else's does.  No solution...

Just curious, does everyone use Vibrate "On" with their ringer?  I always do.  I'm trying it with Vibrate "Off". (Note: This isn't the vibrate "On" when in silent mode, but the vibrate everytime the phone rings option).
