do the greyed out songs play on itunes? possibly the songs have been moved in your itunes library, or the last time you synced the phone with the greyed out songs you unplugged the phone before it was completed the sync? try making sure all the songs are playable on your computer and then try re-syncing.

Thanks, Russell, but, yes, the songs do play on iTunes on the PC (listening to one now). It almost seems as if a switch was flipped yesterday (Jan 1, by the way...hmmmm) on my iPhone that said, "no longer play Protected AAC files".

I've been trying to solve this problem for WEEKS. What finally did it for me was unchecking the box "Automatically fill free space with songs." I noticed that the grayed out songs were only from playlists I asked itunes to sync. It seems as thought the iphone synced the "random" songs first and then tried to sync the playlists and there wasn't anymore room left. Try it!

Seeing as how the greyed-out problem was somewhat random, I'm still not sure of the cause, but I've turned off the sync via wifi and the problem has been solved consistently for a month or so. Bummer that I have to find my USB cable all the time again, though.

It's the sync via Wi-Fi option that was causing the problem. I unchecked it and resysnced. My songs were all playable again. That really ***** because I was hoping I would never have to plug my phone in again but I guess Apple just wants to get more $ out of you by forcing you to pay $25 a year for iTunes Match. What a ridiculous idea...I paid for the songs once already....why would I pay $25 every year to have apple store them on iCloud for me?

I noticed the reason I had greyed out songs on my iPhone was because I'd actually run out of memory...It looks like iTunes will still alllow you to transfer songs across but if you don't realise you're actually over your 16Gb or 32Gb limit, the songs you just transferred are greyed out...Sorry if this is obvious but I looked through all of the above posts when it happened to me, only to find out the problem had a basic solution - delete a bunch of photos to make space! Hope this helps someone else...

So many people like myself have this issue with greyed out songs but where is Apples commentry to help with answers? Zillians of people reporting the same issue but no answer from Apple almost makes this community page a time waster if it wasn't for helpful advice from the public. Thanks Apple

This solved my problem! I don't know how to put the little green icon that says it solved it. Maybe because I wasn't the one that asked the question. Weird that it can't prioritize the songs i select, and the ones it fills extra space with!
Also, I see that alot of people who are paying for ITunes Match are having the same problem, and having to disable it. Guess I won't be getting that service as planned!

I had same problem and took half a day to figure it out... I tried everything i could think or read here and nothing worked. So i decide to restore my iPhone 4S and configure it as a new one. But before, i did some copy/paste of my photos/video folders from Windows Explorer then i've select all then tried to delete it from windows explorer..after few deleted i got a message saying that the device wasnt responding or was unpluged. But wasnt.
some files was not deletable. And in my iPhone the pictures wasnt there too but files was listed in windows explorer....
So, i did a Photos sync but choosing the Windows Sample folder only. It wiped out all my photos folder and did new one, then all my songs were synced again and all is back and playable.
I suggest, look if you have photos, videos, apps that isnt working or not deletable.. then wipe it out by an iTunes sync (unselecting sync those things or sync completely different apps or folder)
It worked for me... Hope you get it fixed too.
