Q: iPhone 4S - Outgoing call no audio

Picked up a Verizon iPhone 4S - 32GB and on about 1 in 10 calls I get no outbound audio when dialing.  Call shows the timer counting as if the call is progressing but absolutely no ring back and cannot hear the party on the other end when they answer.

Anyone else having this issue?  I've found a few forums online stating people have had luck hitting the speaker button on and off to get it working again but it hasn't failed in the past 20 minutes for me to test that theory..

Thanks...

i've found it doesn't matter, iphone to mobile, iphone to land line... same problems. I especially noticed if you ask siri a few questions (at least two in a row) then quit out and try to make a call it almost always has the problem on that first call after using siri.

Just went to the Vodafone NZ store and left it there for them to send away hopefully my next one is trouble free i'll keep you all updated. I decided not to wait around and see if the 5.1 update would cover up this mess because i feel thats all it would be, a software patch covering up faulty hardware. Someone needs to start writing some heavy e-mails to Apple, or the ministry of consumer affairs complaining of unfair trading etc (not sure what your equivalent of ministry of consumer affairs is in the USA) Apple must certainly know of this issue by now, lets be honest they can play dumb all they like but we know they know. The fact they havent even ackknowledged the issue and are continuing to sell or replace phones with these defective ones is surely a breach of fair trading. I'm no lawyer but i'm sure it must be.

You sound exactly like my frustrated self in this thread several pages back. Until I sent my iPhone back via their website support page.  They certainly "acknowledged" my problem with a four day postage prepaid turnaround and more importantly - a fully functional replacement phone.    As for going "public" on this issue - how many of us on this thread do you think there are, compared to 40 million phones sold the last few months?  Less than 1% I bet!  So yeah, we all pulled ringers off an unprecedented assembly line volume - but no point in whining about it, go get your new phone!!!  They will send it to you . . . . without conversation!

Guys try this & let me know if it works.. Today i tried disabling SIRI from setting & restarted my iPhone. & tried calling people & it worked perfect. BUt the main function (SIRI) for what we have the iPhone 4S has to be disabled. I hope it works fine till apple gets a solution for it.. BUt making calls are more important than using this buggy SIRI. Try it & let me know if it works for you. Thanks

I never activated SIRI and never use it, I do not need it, it is disabled... I have OCNA issue. It has nothing to do with SIRI, more likely with antenna or G3 issue since calls within the same G3 area get through after they were called once before.

i don't know if it s software or hardware problem(for me probably software because of some cases in iphone 4 and 3Gs). One week before i restore to 5.0.1 and set up as new. then i update to 5.1 beta 3. From then i dont have any problem (no audio , open speaker, earphones etch ).

How could you have no warranty?  The phones are covered for a year by Apple and the 4s has only been out a few months?  Apple Care phone service may have ended, but you still have the ability to replace the phone via Apple website or Apple Store.

    Hi there,

    Please try this.

Enable mobile data on your iphone 4s.

Reboot the phone and try making calls and sms.

Now disable mobile data, it should work.

Tried this on 2 iphone 4s.

Issue is if you have mobile data disabled, and you boot up your phone, you will NOT be able to hear nor receive any phone calls.

Do try this out and let me know if this helps. Tested this also in IOS 5.1 Beta 3, have same problem which means this issue has never been reported yet (I think).

    Cheers

    Hello,

now I'm about to join this thread "in person" after following it for a while.

To Lookman1964: I just tried your tipp about enabling mobile data, then rebooting. For me it didn't work.

Still the same problem as so often described in this thread: Nearly always when trying to make a call I don't get an audio, while the called can hear me without problems. When being called myself, I have no problems.

Most of the time the trick with activating the speaker and then deactivating it again works and I can make a successful call. But not always. Today was a day where nothing seemed to work.

If you need to make an important call and it doesn't work it's really frustrating!

I have already been to an Apple Store once, where I got the information, that the issue was known and that an IOS-Update is about to be released that fixes the issue. That was supposed to be available at the end of February (I live in Germany, so please excuse any language errors). Now it's March and no Update came around yet. And what's worse: After checking this post again it seems to me, that the new Update 5.1 doesn't seem to fix the problem.

It looks like I too need to get my phone replaced, which is annoying, because I can't use my old smartphone with the Micro-SIM and I don't want to be without a phone while waiting for the new one.

Well it's just one more unhappy iPhone 4S user, but I had higher expectations when finally getting my first iPhone.

I must say my old Samsung Android didn't disappoint nearly as much for not even half the price.

.I have tried everything, that people posted. I took it in to the Apple store she put the paperwork in for a replacement before they had finished thier tests and restore of my phone. I got a replacement  free of charge she said it was not a software problem it was a hardware problem! i am pretty sure they know there is a problem. Just take your phones in and replace them for those who don't have Apple Stores around i would just say you go with the online replacing

    Hi lookman1964,

I tried ur method of enabling my 3G mobile data on my iphone 4s & it is immediately worked!!

I no need to reboot my phone after enabled it & just off the 3G mobile data back to previous condition immediately after I on the mobile data. It also worked!!

But all the while, I will off my 3G mobile data to save the money. And I also off my phone whenever I sleep. But every morning when i wake up, this problem is randomly happened! It might happen in few days, 1 to 2 weeks once!! When I make first call, I can't end my call which always hanged in "call ending", can't bypass it to go into "call ended" status to end the call. When this happened, I try to call & sms my phone using other phone & it can get thru & delivered the sms but my phone would not ring & receive any sms!!

Even I tried don't off my phone every nights, it will also happen randomly & don't know when!! All my very important business calls & sms can't be received & made me get scolded by others & lost many of my business opportunities!! Very disappointed with Apple until now also can't find the solution!!

I suspect this is due to 3G anthena or "connection" in between iphone & sim card because our carrier has sent all the calls & sms successfully to us, but our iphone can't show it up to us!! Hope this issue can be fixed by firmware upgrading as soon as possible instead of new iphone replacement!!

I also believe that this issue has never been reported yet & seem coming IOS 5.1 might not fix this issue.

I also told all my friends & even my wife about this issue & stop them to buy 4S until all the problems fixed!! (hopefully can be fixed by Apple??!!) Or if really urgent to buy a new smartphone then why don't buy Samsung Galaxy Note which is **** hot in the market!!

    Thanks for your posting, lookman1964!!

But the problem is my friend's iphone 4 (not 4S) also have this problem after upgrading to IOS 5.0.1. So I suspect is not the hardware problem but the IOS 5.0.1 software & hopefully can be fixed by Apple thru coming IOS 5.1 as soon as possible!!
