Hello Apple Support Communities

Today I found out that Mac OS X Mountain Lion has come out (a sneak peak), and also Messages beta has been available.

But when I installed it and tried to message to a friend with Google Talk, it wouldn't send.

Messages kept on telling me that this person did not have iMessage, and I couldn't send a word.

Anyone else having this problem? I know that Messages is still in beta, but I think that Messages shouldn't be this flawed to be beta.

Here's a Snapshot:

Prior to installing Messages beta were you able to message this person using iChat. Also, are you using a Gmail account or some other Jabber/XMPP account?

Yes I was able to chat with the person on iChat.

And also, I only use the Google Talk account other then the iMessage Account.

does you're address have any periods an it? sometimes you need to keep the periods so the mac will send it correctly.

    Nope. No periods.

Well, I've tested GoogleTalk accounts and they work as they did before in iChat. The reason I was curious about your situation is because of the error message you are getting.

The message could not be sent.

… is not available for iMessage

It seems like the Messages app thinks you are trying to contact the GoogleTalk account using an iMessage account but they are not available, which would be correct since they are not compatible. In other words you are trying to use your iMessage account to contact a GoogleTalk account which is not possible. GoogleTalk and iMessage use different protocols just like iCloud (AIM) accounts and GoogleTalk (Jabber/XMPP) use different protocols. If you want to message someone on GoogleTalk you need to also have a GoogleTalk account, or at least some kind of Jabber/XMPP account, to do so.

I am using google talk for a large business setup - Initially had a few problems so I did the uninstall reinstalled ichat removed all of the ichat and messages preferences in the user/library/preferences folder and then did the install again.  This will make messages launch like it was is brand new and then that solved all of my problems.  You might just go into a different user account that has never used ichat and launch messages and see if it works correctly under that account - that will show you if it is truely a problem with translating the ichat preferences into messages.  Worked for me - hope it helps.

Still can't delete old messages though:

    Case Closed. Found a way.

Went to Window, then Buddies, and I was able to connect with Google Talk.

I can finally chat with Google Talk in Messages!

Oh, I thought that would have been obvious. In iChat was that not the way you initiated a chat session before?

That is how I always used iChat. I picked the person I wanted to chat with from the buddy list and that is how I continue to do things in Messages.

cmd 1 to hide and show the buddy list when you're in Messages.

This should help you out and possibly be the reason they were hidden before.

    Hi,

CMD + 1 only hides or reveals the Account  in the Messages > Preferences > Accounts List in second place (it used to be the top one in iChat)

This list can be dragged into a different order.

My office uses Adium as its inter-office chat function, but I have friends who have lept on the messages beta system, which is great!  I am really excited, but my office is established on Adium...

Is it possible to add iMessage users to my contact list on adium?  I have an Apple ID, but I am not sure if this can be an added account within Adium.  For example, I have my GoogleTalk contacts available in the Adium interface, but how do I get my iMessage contacts to show when they are available?  Is there an XMPP address for iMessage; for example: mrgrumpypants@chat.apple.com  or something?

Thanks for any help on this homefront!

It depends on what protocol(s) you are using with Adium. Messages on the Mac, like iChat before it, and Adium are multi-protocol instant messaging clients. Messages supports the following protocols:

AIM: used for iCloud (formally MobileMe), AIM

iMessage: used for iOS devices-to-device messaging. Messages adds Mac-to-iOS device messaging

XMPP/Jabber: used for Mac OS X Server, Google Talk

Yahoo!: used for Yahoo! Instant Messenger

Bonjour: used for Mac OS inter-office messaging (LAN)

Find the common protocol that is supported by Adium, I'm sure there are a few to choose from, and use it to communicate with your Messages using friends/colleagues .

    Hi,

Broadly speaking the iMessages side is not going to be supported by Adium.

As far as your Apple ID goes it depends what type of Apple ID it is.

Apple have in the past issued emails for the .Mac Service (@mac.com ) and MobileMe (@me.com) and currently do iCould (Also @me.com)

When .Mac ended and MobileMe started people who moved to MobileMe could use both emails linked to one account.

However they were and are separate AIM valid Screen Names.  (the passwords have to be kept to 16 characters or less)

iCloud issued IDs will work only in iChat 6 and Messages Beta.

This is because both these app make to logins, one to AIM and the second to me.com

Thi second login allows AIM to confirm the password.

This is something earlier version of iChat or other apps that an do AIM logins do not do.

Any other Apple ID is unlikely to be a  Screen Names  (although AIM do allow you to register and email as a "Name")
