i've tried uninstalling, clearing out al iChat accounts and reinstalling.

i've tried the 8.8.8.8 DNS port suggestion.

i've tried deleting security certificates in keychain.

i've tried setting the messages app on my iPhone to use my apple id instead of phone number.

no matter what i do, the messages beta crashes on launch, sometimes after asking if i want to restore windows, sometimes without.

sometimes after a clean reinstall i can send one message to my wife's account/phone before there is a crash.

i've tried uninstalling a multitude of times in a multitude of ways, but whatever i do, messages beta keeps crashing on launch.

so, what now?

am i basically just screwed, so that if anyone message my apple id instead of my phone number the messge will be sent to this app which will not open for more than a couple of seconds at best?

    Hi,

With Lion and System Preferences > Mail, Contacts and Calendars you may find some "Accounts" listed previously for iChat are still active in Messages.

If they are, turn them Off in this pane.

What sort of IChat Buddy list were you running ?

How many were logged in ?

Have you tried opening Activity Monitor and using it to Force Quit IMAgent ?

i had no active messages accounts. as i said in my original post i had deleted them all out of iChat before installing Mesages Beta.

so there were none to turn off.

what kind of IChat buddy list was i running? as i said, none. i wasn't able to delete the iChat bonjour account, so i suppose that is still there.

    none were logged in.

i have tried opening Activity Monitor and used it to Force Quit imagent. nothing happened. either it did not quit or quit and immediately restarted without having appeared to have quit.

none of this fixed the Messages Beta issue that i continue to have, crash on launch.

    hi,

Do you have a wired keyboard ?

If so, then I would also try a PRAM reset.

    Shut down the computer.

Restart it holding down Apple/CMD ( or ⌘)+ALT( ⌥)+P+R Keys until you have heard three Start Up Bongs.

    PRAM Keys

no, i do not have a wired keyboard. i am on a macbook.

messages is prepopulated with some conversations when i launch it.. then immeditely crashes. one of these conversations includes mesages from my phone to the desktop client, preumably using the same account.

    OK,

The PRAM reset will work on a Laptop  (I also found out it is supposed to work on wireless Keyboards)

that seemed to have maybe worked for about a minute post restart, though i never was actually able to send off a message .. and now back to the exact same problem.

    Hi,

    Do it again.

This time use the Uninstall option in the Message Menu so it goes back to iChat.

Then try downloading Messages again and  reinstalling

this presumes the app stays open long enough to activate uninstall via the menu. it does not.

  • 10. Re: messages beta crashes on launch
    striatic Level 1 Level 1 (0 points)

ok, i managed to do this by opening the app and rapidly tapping command+w.

it took maybe 10 relaunches but i was eventually able to clear the conversations, and then the app stayed open long enough to start the uninstall, which i am currently executing.

  • 11. Re: messages beta crashes on launch
    striatic Level 1 Level 1 (0 points)

that didn't work, but i have learned that i can get the app not to crash by having no conversations open.

sorta makes the app useless, because whenever i start a conversation the app immediately crashes, but there you have it.

    Hi,

In your Home Folder/Library/Preferences  (Use the Finder > GO Menu and hold ALT key and select Library) what com.apple.ichat items do you have ?  (Just the ones ending in .plist not the Lockfiles ones)

Before doing anything with those find and drag to the Trash com.apple.imagent.plist

Go to the Applications/Utilities and Open Application Monitor and use this to Force Quit IMAgent.

(It will restart again but this time it will recreate the missing .plist from defaults)

    Oh My !!!

Leave the com.apple.iChatAgent.plist for the moment.

Leave the plain com.apple.Subnet.plist  (it is the Bonjour side).

Delete (Drag to Trash) everything else including associated Lockfiles.
