Q: My new iMac can't connect to my printer
My laser printer (Tektronix Phaser 750P--yes, it's old) is connected to my network with an ethernet cable to my wireless router. My old iMac prints to it just fine, but my new iMac won't. Whenever I try to print the print dialog box shows the printer's name, so the PPD must be in place, but then I get the error message "The printer is not connected" if my old iMac is asleep. I have to wake it up for the printer to work. I've tried everything I can in the Print & Scan and Sharing panels of System Prefs to no avail. One thing, when I select Printer Sharing in the Sharing panel, the printer name does not appear in the printer list. I really need some help because I don't want to have to rely on my old iMac to be able to print.
By the way, I also tried connecting the printer directly to the new iMac's ethernet port and that didn't work either, so I may be missing some file. Any ideas?

Check Printer and scanner software for Snow Leopard & Lion to see if that printer is supported in Lion. Another good read is Printing Overview OS X Lion.
You also may be able to print by adding it as an IP device.
- System Preferences
- Print & Scan
- Press + symbol at the bottom of the box on the left
- Click IP
- Add the IP address of the printer (you will need the printer's utilities to supply the IP address)
