RIght now this is a server-side issue and there is almost nothing we as end-users can do. The only thing we can do is to make sure we've got the artwork applied in iTunes. Apple is going to have to fix this on the server-side.

This is what I figured also. Have you heard this officially or is this your best guess? It's the only thing that makes sense.

Obviously it's nothing official since this is a user-to-user forum, and Apple does not actively participate here. However, as you say, it makes sense since pretty much all of the trouble shooting steps the regulars have done don't seem to make much difference.

Okay, just wanted to clarify in case you had read something official. I didn't think there would be, but still. And I know better than to ask a "Genius." What an ironic term.

Wow Steve. I can't believe I have found someone with the exact same issues as I do and when you said in your original post that you couldn't find any "consistencies" with the artwork problems, I said to myself this guy is going through the same **** as I am. When I first heard of iTunes Match for the first time, I spent a whole day adding the missing artwork to my 1258 albums. After purchasing iTunes Match and letting it scan my whole library, there were some 80 albums that had lost their cover art in my library. This is a part from the fact that some albums that DO have cover art do not have their artwork appear on my iPhone and iPad. I have also noticed some albums have their artwork appear on the album page but not when i'm on the artist or individual song page.
I did notice one thing though that I hope they fix. There are some albums of mine, which are compilations of various artists, that I rather have regrouped under one artist for easy finding. When I tried modifying the artist for a complete album which cover art is displayed, the cover art would disappear from my devices.
This shows me that there are many sorting issues that will have to be corrected and I'm guessing alot of them are related to the album cover art issues.
I justed wanted to add the fact that I have noticed the exact same issues as you did and hoping that this will all be resolved someday by Apple because I don't think there is anything more we can do.

Angelo, if I understand your sorting problem correctly I think I have a solution for you to try. I have compilations that are DJ mixes, so every track is by a different artist but I want the album listed under the DJs name that mixed it. I figured out that I could accomplish this by making the "Album Artist" the name of the DJ. I've done the same thing for side projects. For example: I want Chris Cornell's solo album sorted with my Soundgarden albums. So I leave Chris as the artist but Soundgarden as the Album Artist. Now sorting by artist lines those albums up together.
See if that solves your issue.
Beyond the artwork problems, iTunes Match just randomly stops playing. It gets stuck downloading songs and just hangs. But I think this is more an AT&T network problem so I can only blame Apple for partnering with them in the first place.
iTunes Match is not ready for the general public or the US mobile networks. I recommend people NOT purchase this service yet. It just doesn't work.

New version of iTunes today with supposed improvements to iTunes Match. Artwork was specifically mentioned. We'll see...

Well Steve that was a helpful tip you gave me. But like many things I've tried recently to solve certain issues, this also created a new problem for me.
I selected all the songs from a Ciara CD which have various artists featured on certain of them. I did as you said. Went in the info for the set of songs on this album, entered "Ciara" in the "Album Artist" and as soon as I did this, the artwork disappeared from the cover on my devices, in the artist sorted tab. If I go in the album tab, this album figures perfectly with all songs sorted by "Ciara" and artwork showing perfectly. What's even weirder is that if I go back to the artist sorted tab, where my Ciara album has no thumbnail covert art, and tap on that album, I will get the covert art showing and songs sorted perfectly. I don't get it. I notice that everytime I manually change some info for a song, something goes wrong with the artwork? Do you get this as well? "Group by Album Artist" in my Music settings on my iPad is set On obviously.
If I go to the individual song tab, I get artwork showing for every Ciara solo songs on that album but ever Ciara feat. X has no artwork showing. It's the perfect recipe to make me go nuts
Anyway did all my updates today and nothing got better.

I'm having almost the same problem. The iTunes Library on my Mac has all the correct artwork. When I turn iTunes Match on on my iPhone, songs that I purchased as a single (now changed into an album) revert back to the Single Artwork instead of the Album Artwork as on my Mac. Apparently today's update for iTunes was supposed to fix the Artwork problem, but just tried it out and still the same thing. Not happy.

Well, since the iTunes upgrade yesterday things have improved. Most of the artwork on my iPhone has appeared, but there's still a small number of albums where it hasn't.
The missing artwork didn't appear all at once it appeared sporadically. Also, I've spotted a couple of albums where the artwork was on the iPhone but has now disappeared
Hopefully this will gradually resolve itself in time.
One other woerd thing is that I have one album that shows correctly, complete with artwork, in iTunes but on my phone the album appears twice (without artwork) and the tracks split between the two copies. None of the tracks appear on both copies of the album and they aren't sequential either, i.e. it's not a case of tacks 1 to 6 on the first copy and 7 to 12 on the second, they're random. Anyone else seen this problem?

I'm seeing artwork much more consistantly now. I've also noticed that lyrics have been removed from any song I had added them to. So glad I didn't spend hours over a span of months finding, copying and editing lyrics cause I'd be really ******...
