Messages Beta no longer displays my accounts. The preferences setting is grayed out, thus not selectable and not able to configure accounts.

I did the upgrade from iChat several days ago. Messages worked for a while. Then as of yesterday it's unusable.

Anyone else? Suggestions?

I just had this same issue as well.  It's worked for about 3 weeks for me without issues and today everything is gone.  Anyone else see this or know how to resolve it?

I have had this happen every few days, restarting fixes it for me. As far as prevention, I don't have a clue.

That worked for me.  Just a restart.  Probably about time, it's been a few days!

I have the same issue. It never occured to me to just restart, so twice now I've run the uninstaller and then run the installer again, and then restarted. The second time, I deleted all of my iChat preferences. We'll see if the issue comes back again.

Oddly enough, it never works the first time I start the app after a system restart. I always have to quit and re-open it to get it working again.

It's quite annoying to have to reboot twice to fix this.  It works but it's not cool.

    HI all,

I would check the System Preferences > Mail, Contacts, and Calendars settings particularly for your iCloud or other Apple ID that you might use with Messages.

I'll try looking if it happens again. Any reason the accounts being inactive would grey-out every menu item, including about and preferences, as well as preventing the buddy list from being shown (even if it would be empty)?

    Hi,

This will depend on the a amount of names/accounts used in Messages.

My Apple ID for doing iMessage things is also a Valid AIM Screen Name but I have to set it up twice in Messages (once as the iMessage name  and again as a AIM valid @me.com name)

AS my Apple ID I sue is my iCloud issued @me.com name that is linked to an Older Apple ID that is based on a non Apple email address that I have used since 2003 (mostly for posting here).

As you can see from my Pic iCloud shows up at least twice as Inactive (whereas the top item in the list is also the iCloud info and the Messages app is logged in for iMessage stuff.)

One of these instances is the older email address and the other is from name at Jabber.me.com and is nothing to do with a Apple ID.

The Original Poster implies he has iChat account(s) and an iMessage name previously set up.

If they all get set to Inactive then this link between the Preference Pane and the App means there are no Active accounts.

The Issue about not being able to access the Preferences at this point is probably a Read/Write error to the .plists involved

Trashing my preferences didn't help; this has just happened to me again.

I checked my Mail, Contacts & Calendars in System Preferences and all of my accounts were gone except for iCloud.

I have just restarted and all of my accounts appear in System Preferences again, as well as in Messages, as well as restoring all the menus and functionality in the UI.

I still don't know the cause, but at least I have a solution.

I'm not sure if it's related, but I just opened up Messages and I was greeted with a dialog to set up my Apple ID. All of my accounts were there and online, and in System Preferences I could see that my accounts were all fine. I entered my name and password and everything was fine. Just odd that it suddenly forgot that it already had the information.

I decided to run Onyx and clean out caches and temporary items (as well as checking the file system and repairing permissions).

After the restart, everything seems fine still; all my accounts are there and only one instance of each.

We'll see if it happens again.

Nope. Just happened again. Everything greyed out, and no windows will draw except and empty message window when I click the icon in the dock (not that that windows actually does anything).

At this point I'm giving up and waiting for an update. I'll just have to restart each time.

This just happened to me. A restart seems to be the only thing that fixes it .
