Can I get audio to play til the end, even if I turn the page?

  1. I know how to add a quicktime audio file, but once you turn to the next page, the audio file stops. Is there a way to set the audio to play til the end regardless of how many pages you turn? Or would I have to split up the audio and have the user play it on each page they turn to?
  2. Are there any options for the audio player interface? Or would I have to resort to using a widget?

I noticed this too in a book I created with 135 audio files.

It seems to be related to when the next section moves into view the audio ceases.

View book best in portrait mode and keep your fingers on the text as you scroll, lifting and selecting a point again kills the audio.

Yes I have this exact problem too, there seems to be no way of configuring the audio player to keep playing the audio no matter what page you are on. This makes iBooks author pretty useless for any language teaching applications/text books where people might want to follow a transcript that spans multiple pages with one audio file.

Keep in mind this is a virtual book, not an extension of producers preferences. Music plaining from begining to end is superfluous. - Fabe

Hi Fabe, thanks for your reply.

I don't really agree that it's superfluous, any more than embedding an audio/video file in a text book in the first place is superfluous. I think being able to chose to play an embedded audio file through multiple pages is a fairly elementary feature request, and I feel sure that we'll see this feature added soon, if indeed it's not possible already.

Personally I'm not interested in embedding a random soundtrack or music track for aesthetic reasons, I am interested in its application for language-teaching text books as it will enable people to follow spoken word (conversation) transcripts along with the text - something very useful for languages and education.

Send a request in to Apple for this feature.

As always, feel free to use the 'Provide iBooks Author Feedback' menu item for features you'd like added in the future, etc.

Thanks KT. I have submitted this as a feature request.

I've just bought the enhanced edition of The Story of Naxos, and was intrigued to see that the embedded audio files do continue playing after the page has been turned.  So it's clearly something that iBooks itself is capable of handling, even if iBooks Author doesn't cater for it - and I've also submitted a feature request pointing this out.

And with regard to the "superfluous" comment, it depends entirely on the nature of the project.  The one I've postponed until this feature is introduced involves recordings of Schubert songs that are supposed to be playable over the original German lyrics, an English translation, a musicological analysis and a facsimile of the score - the idea being that you can listen to the complete song while exploring various aspects of it.  But it's impossible to fit all this material onto one page, and even reading it in portrait mode doesn't work, as the music stops playing as soon as the embedded images from the score appear.

Is that book in ePub or in iBooks format?

As best as I know, there is no way to do this in IBA, so I suspect that the book may have been published as an ePub. If you see a page-turning animation when you turn pages instead of the next page sliding in, it's an ePub book.

    Michi.
