I can confirm this Problem.
At the very first try itunes even said, (if i remember correctly) it would be unable to play the 1080p file.
Now i also get the Message that the File is too large.
The File i am trying: The Big Bang Theory - Season 5 - Episode 1 (free of charge, but still with DRM)
I tryd Both Itunes and Quicktime, Quicktime gives the Message too, starts the File but Plays no Video or Sound.
Other Players no chance cause of the DRM. (Hey Apple, i also downloaded your last Keynote in HD yesterday, should i mention that this HD is 960*540 pixels? But cool, its DRM free :-D)
Win 7 64 Bit: Intel Core2Quad Q6600 (running smoothly for 4 years and is keeping up - no need for change)
8GB of RAM
Monitor 1: 22 inch - resolution: 1680x1050
Monitor 2: 37 inch - resolution: 1920x1080
Maybe the resolution on the Main Monitor is giving the warning, that would be crap.
Iam seeing by moving itunes to second Monitor it runs smoothier...
I'm willing to bet that the "File too large" Message is a bug, as I usually use 2 1920x1080 monitors (Only one right now) , the content still plays fine for me however, with the exception of some lag now and then, which I hope they fix.

Same issues for me. I have a brand new Dell, purchased a week ago. The computer is plenty adequate: 3.4ghz i7, 16 gig ram, 7200 SATA 2 drive, AMD Radeon HD 6770, etc etc. Plugged into a 1920x1200 monitor. When I play a 1080p video it gives me the playback warning and the playback is very jumpy. Video will sometimes freeze while audio continues, then will speed forward to get into sync. Other times it's just jumpy. Problems of this sort are pretty constant.
Compare that to my 5 year old Macbook Pro. It plays 1080p with no warning and no lag. Hardware is far inferior to the Dell yet 1080p playback has no issues.
I'm assuming something with my hardware or software settings can be tweaked to improve performance. As it is, playback is very annoying. I was having some of these issues prior to 1080p so I've got something unrelated going on. As for the warning popping up, there's no reason iTunes should have an issue with my hardware.

I am having the same problem. After researching the problem I came upon a startling conclusion from Apples support site.
If you are trying to run 1080p on a none apple product (PC). You need to have components that support HDCP (High Definition Content Protection). It then goes on to say that Windows, Video Card, and Monitor need to support HDCP. If you don't have all 3 it won't work. 32 and 64bit versions of windows XP, Vista, and windows 7 do not support HDCP.
Thomas you're incorrect, read the page that you link to a little closer. It says that Windows 7 is compatible with HDCP, Windows XP and Vista are not.
I built my computer with Windows 7 from the ground up to be 100% HDCP compatible. It is exclusively a home theater system. It is used to watch all forms of HDCP content from Blu-rays to premium cable through a cable card. iTunes is the only viewing experience that is giving me this error.
Actually I was rather glad to find this post I thought it was just me having problems. My system is fine on 1080P but I still get the error message. This really wasn't a surprise to me since my system was capable but Itunes disabled it for Vista (Vista Ultimate 64 bit can run DHCP but itunes disabled it for all Vista users.
The Itunes tech family doesn't seem very fond of people who run compatible P.C.s and don't seem to care how much trouble their bugs have been causing. When I did contact someone in support after they disabled Itunes HD on my system that previously could play it, he submitted a case to the engineering team. Their reply was a very positive combination of customer service statements that amounted to "We don't care if we disabled content that worked for you before and you already paid for, or if our tech sheet on Vista capabilities was a bold-faced lie.". If they keep treating all of the Windows system users like this they stand to lose a huge percentage of their business.
I agree with Global I just upgraded to Win7 against my better wishes just to comply with their mandate. I was pretty upset to see that message rear it's head after re-configuring two systems to reach 100 percent compliance. The problem is with the Itunes team. Considering that the software runs a retail store and they have a responsibility to customers, they should take bugs and hardware/software requirement changes more seriously. What you may not know is about another bug they didn't fix. If you own a HD version and Itunes checks and determines your system isn't HD per it's beer goggles it refuses to let you download what you already paid for and offers to sell you the SD version you already own and have.
It's a retail store without any serious customer service branch or sense of responsibility to it's customers...I will say it's very convenient when it actually works though!
