Q: iMessage not syncing between iPad and iPhone

Hey all,

So, I have a 3GS and an iPad 2, both on iOS 5.0. One of the advertised iMessage features is that you can start the conversation on one device, and finish on the other. However, messages I receive on my iPad don't show up on my iPhone, and vice versa.

I've heard that this has to do with the Caller ID defaulting to the device's phone number on the iPhone, but I'm not 100% sure if this is the case or not. I've also heard of other people having success of this syncing between iPhone and iPad, so I'm really not sure.

Just wondering if anyone has any insight as to why iMessage isn't syncing between my iPad and my iPhone that are both signed into the same Apple ID/iCloud account?

Thanks,
Behn

Where is the set caller I'd on the iPhone...?

My caller ID field on 3GS allows numbers only! Why would I set caller Id when this is about wifi messaging and i have got the apple ID on both devices? Confusing!

The caller id cannot be set up identically with the iphone 4s and the ipad3 because the ipad does not have a phone number associated with it and you cannot add a phone number to the ipad....I wish you could.  If someone sends a text message to me, unless they send it using an email address rather than my phone number my ipad will not receive it....bummer.

Let me add to the accolades for the fine explanation from rbbcpa! I also noticed that you must delete the old message threads in order to synchronize to multiple iOS 5 devices. However, it was unnecessary to force the Caller ID to the Apple ID email address to make it work. Thanks again!

This worked for me, the same principles (receive-at, caller-id) also works for iMessage on Mac so that messages sync there too.  Note that you can't use your mobile number as a caller-id on the Mac so you have to choose an email for them to sync up.

Hey thanks a lot for your help!

I had discovered that both users need to have their phones set up correctly in order for this to work. When I set my wife's phone to reflect her apple id in the caller id it worked instantly.

I have the same problem where I am not getting my messages on both devices.   I think I may have solved the problem by going into Messages on my iphone and then selecting Receive At and then adding my email address (only my phone number was there).   After doing that, it says that I will Receive At 2 addresses and I'm assuming that my iphone will now be able to receive the messages that I send on my ipad.  I then tried to add my phone number to my ipad Receive At setting but it doesn't allow me to do that.   Hopefully, that won't matter and both devices will bbe able to just sync through my email address.

To really make sure I understand what you have said: I can initiate a message on my computer and iPad but if I receive a new message from someone, it only shows up on my phone unless it is sent to my Apple ID?

This happened because each device has a different contact email or number. It can't sync if the number or email are different.

I sest up my iPhone and iPad as rbbca described on Oct 15, 2011 @ 6:26 PM.  My messages to individuals sync properly on both devices whether I initiate the messages on my iPhone or iPad.

Group messages are another story.  They only appear on the device where the message was initiated.  I confirmed that all recipients in the group message have iMessage/iOS5 AND my iMessage appear blue (not green).

    I did this test:

    1. Initiated a group iMessage from my iPhone

    2. I asked one of my friends to reply

    3. I only received the reply on my iPhone

    4. I asked my friend to check the details behind my name and it showed my phone number and not my Apple ID

    5. I initiated a second group iMessage from my iPad

    6. I asked one of my friends to reply

    7. I only received the reply on my iPad

    8. I asked my frirend to check the details behind my name and it showed my Apple ID.

I definitely have my Apple ID setup on my iPhone in "Received At" and "Caller ID".  And as I stated at the top of this thread, sync-ing works for iMessages to individuals.

    Any ideas?

Is this a known issue?  OR is there a workaround?

    Thanks.

    -Phil

Wish I had searched the forums and found this before I wasted today! I think I had come to the same conclusions as this but thought with Apple being so brilliant I must be making a mistake and I even added my mobile number to my iCloud account details as I thought that might be what was letting me down.

Thanks for the detailed explanation, lets hope mobile number as part of your apple id is something they can add going forward

Start a conversation with your iPad it should show on your friends as your email .. If he replies to that it will go to both but if u message from your phone and reply it will go to just your phone as he is not messaging your email so your iPad don't have a clue.
