That would be 2GB of RAM memory. Go to the Apple up top left and see about this Mac and see how much RAM you have.  Disk space of which you will need at least 7GB free but realistaclly a lot more, is different than RAM.

To use Lion, make sure your computer has the following:

    • An Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor
    • Mac OS X v10.6.6 or later to install via the Mac App Store (v10.6.8 recommended); you can install without Mac OS X v10.6 by using an OS X Lion USB Thumb Drive, available on the Apple Online Store
    • 7 GB of available disk space
    • 2 GB of RAM

If your Mac does not meet these requirements, you will need to upgrade your Mac before installing Lion.

How do I upgrade my mac to meet the requirements? Can I do this online?

What do you need to upgrade? The only thing you can really do is buy and add more memory (RAM) or if your hard drive space is to low you will have to free up some space. If your processor is not at least Core2Duo then you are out of luck and if you don't have Snow Leopard you will have to buy it to install and then update to Lion. You really haven't given up much to go on.

It depends upon what computer hardware you have, how technically adept you are, if your computer is under warranty, and what needs doing.  If it is just RAM, I believe that is user-servicable even under warranty.  You could get the best advice on upgrading  parts by posting on the correct hardware forum for your particular computer.  Tell people exactly which machine you have and where you are (for a parts supplier in your country).

To get more information about your computer, go to the Apple in the upper left corner of any window, then "About This Mac", then "More Info..."  Copy and paste the information here, but omit the serial number.

My mac info from "about this mac" is imac5,1, intel core 2 duo memory 1GB.  However, i had SATA installed with a capacity of 1TB, link speed of 1.5 gigabit model WDC WD1001FALS. The information about the SATA installed is also listed in "about this mac" under "serial-ATA."  So, I don't understand why lion is saying I need more memory.  Is lion not reading the 1tb memory i upgraded to?  thanks

If you haven't got it from the above responses, MEMORY is not HARD DRIVE SPACE.

You have a 1TB hard drive. That's all well and good.

However, you only have 1GB of RAM (memory). Lion requires 2GB. You need another gigabyte.

Go to crucial.com, locate the model of iMac you have. You probably have 2 x 500MB chips installed (check your System Profiler, under the Apple Menu, About This Mac, More Info, then look at the Memory section). You'll need either 2 x 1GB chips, or 1 x 1GB and 1 x 2GB (you can install up to 3GB of RAM in your iMac).

As Matt Clifton has stated, you need to add more RAM, and giving you a pointer to Crucial.com is a good idea (the other well respected Mac RAM vendor is MacSales.com (OWC).

I would STRONGLY suggest getting MORE than 2GB for your iMac.  Get at least 4GB, and if Crucial or MacSales says you can take more (like 8GB) AND if the cost is not too expensive, I would go for 8GB.  Generally speaking RAM is the least expensive way to improve the performance of any computer system.  BUT ONLY get a lot more IF AND ONLY IF the cost is not too excessive.
