Q: Opening Clarisworks password protected documents with Pages

I have a password protected appleworks/clarisworks file that I can no longer open because I upgraded to Mac OSX Snow Leopard.  I bought "Pages"  which transferred all my other documents, but will not "import" this because it's "password protected".

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.8), Just upgraded to Snow Leopard...

If the document was produced with ClarisWorks, or with any AppleWorks version prior to AppleWorks 6, then Pages will not open it regardless of whether it's password protected.

Pages can translate AppleWorks 6 Word Processing documents. The password algorithms used by AppleWorks are not translateable (or recognised) by Pages. To open that document, you'll need to use AppleWorks (6), and you'll have to know the password.

You may be able to recover the text (but not the formatting) from the document by opening it in a text editor, such as Text Edit (found in Applications > Utilities on your Mac) or Text Wrangler (free from BareBones Software, also available through the Mac app store). The text editor will also show all of the identification and formatting code before and after the text, so you will have a minor amount of digging to do.

    Regards,

Hi Barry!  Thank you for the response. I willingly confess that I am a technical moron and think technology is satanic.....lol!  However, I have an old eMac - which I hated from the day I bought it to replace my Mac Performer.  I dug it out, and managed to re-start it with an old OS X start-up disk that had either Appleworks or Clarisworks on it.  I saved the problem documents to a thumb drive, inserted it into the eMac, and was able to open them because THAT machine asked me for my password.  Then I used Apple Help and found out how to remove a password (you have to open it using your password, select Properties under the File menu; select Set Password; leave the bar blank; and save changes.  I then copied that back to the thumbdrive.  Put the thumbdrive into my MacBook Pro and was able to open with pages............. Dear God...I'm so glad we have all these gadgets to make our lives easier.....I won't even start talking about my printer.....

    Relieved,

    Kim

This was my first time in a forum. It was helpful and fast and I will definitely be back with my next problem.  Thanks again!

My iMac Indigo running OS9 bombed, last week, for the first time in years.

    Oh the pain!
