Hi,

Recently, I disabled automatic login in OSX Lion. However, I have noticed that in doing so my MacBook sometimes will freeze at the log in screen (with a spinning beach ball) forcing me to force restart. Checking in console, it seems that the issue is somehow related to the GPU. Here are the console messages.

The thing is that I do not know what could be causing this issue with the GPU. It has happened 3 times already since disabling auto log in, and at the same place. I know that my MacBook Pro model is under an Apple service program due to some being shipped with faulty logic boards (see here). But, before going through the hurdle of visiting my Apple Store and get my computer tested for a possible failure, I would like to know what other possibilities can cause my issue.

Thanks for any assistance that can be provided on this matter. I honestly need some assistance with this issue...

Bump. Is anyone being able to get the meaning of these Console log entries? I am really lost here? Can someone point me to the right people to help me with these messages? (not AppleCare as I am no longer covered by their warranty).

Bump & Update. I personally filed a bug to Apple Developer and I really hope that they come out with a solution for this in the future. Now I would like to know if any other users have experienced this log in screen freeze issues in their 2010 MacBook Pro. It seems that the problem has to do with automatic graphics switching.

I encourage everyone that suffers from this issue to contact Apple directly via:

    http://www.apple.com/macosx/feedback

You can also create a developer account (is free, as long you don't belong to the Mac or iOS developer program) to file bug reports via Bug Reporter at:

    http://developer.apple.com/programs/start/standard/create.php

or... contact executives at Apple (I will not put their e-mail addresses here, but they can be easily found with a Google Search ).

Let's hope Apple keep improving OSX Lion with the upcoming software patches.

Thought, I could give an update to all the silent people here at the Apple Forums. I performed a clean install of Lion (5th) and set up the computer to ask for a password at the log in screen for the start. To my surprise the log in screen issue occurred again. This means that this problem is software driven and has to do with the implementation of automatic graphics switching that has been added to OSX Lion. I will be waiting now for Mac OS X 10.7.3 to continue testing, perhaps I will download the full OS installer to test my luck and see what happens.

I do hope that Apple addresses this in the future. I want that anyone who is suffering from this issue to open Console and check for the following string "DumpGPURestart". If its present it can help Apple to understand that this issue is common and their automatic graphics switching implementation in OSX Lion *****.

I'm experiencing the exact same issues. Please let me know if you find a solution.

Does it still happen when you disable automatic graphics switching?

    Hi all.

I've read that the new version 10.7.3 solved this issue..

    Did anyone check this?

Unfortunately I have 10.7.3, and have only just started to experience this particular problem two days ago. Happened to me twice then, and once just now. Not cool. I have the same DumpGPURestart messages as posted above.

    Hi Scott88,

Do you by any chance own an nvidia equipped Mac? I have the mid 2010 MacBook Pro with an nvidia 330m graphics card. As for me, I could not longer hear the grahics related issues with OSX Lion so I ended up returning to Snow Leopard. I am much happier now, my computer has been running fine since downgrading.

I filed a bug report at Apple and they as expected "do not have any information on the issue so far", which off course is their way of saying we won't work on this until you can replicate it. The thing is that there are several YouTube videos that show this issue and the only solution so far is to disable the automatic graphics switching function to force he discrete GPU on, but other than that the latter is just a stop-gap measure.

Hope this helps and believe me, OSX Lion is the worst OS to be released in Apple's history. It's highly unstable and problematic. Let's hope Apple amends this with Mountain Lion.

As a matter of fact, I do have a "NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M" apparently, on a 15" mid-2010 model. I can't go back to SL (I am already hooked on too many L features, and develop for iPads, so I need to be current). I will however try your suggestion to force the discrete GPU on though; really appreciate that suggestion!

Hope it works for you, just out of curiosity has your MacBook Pro frozen while browsing in Safari with a never ending beachball? I also suffer from that issue and the same dump GPU restart message appears.
