My friends I promised to update you so ....

Had same problem after upgrading Friday to 5.1, but today I replaced handset

NEW 4S and now after 6 hours of SB and nearly 2 Hours of USAGE

    I have still 67%!!!!

No doubt it was a faulty handset! The usage time was equal to SB Time and after only 5 hours was down to

    10%!

Don't try to turn off Apps. Try to replace the phone !

I don't know what your usage was, so that might be fine.  At least it looks like you will get through a day with no recharge.  You might try fine tuning some settings and do better.

I've found out something what causes the battery to drain:

    It's iCloud!

Take a look at the mobile data traffic NOT using a WLAN-Connection. It adds approx. 1 kB of data traffic per second. This drastically reduces battery-life.

Disabling the services (Mail, Calendar.. find my iPhone etc) in iCloud doesn't help!

You have to delete the Account to stop this!!!

Remember to disable WLAN and enable "mobile Data" to cause data traffic to use 3G that you can monitor under "Mobile Usage" / "Cellular usage".

You have to reset the counter to see the kb increase ( you can't see additional kBs if you have already a MB loaded) and move back an forth in the menu to update the screen.

A good diagnostic idea, that should help some users pin down their battery drain.  Thanks.

PT Barnum was correct a sucker is born every minute. To pay for these 4s phone the money they cost and then be happy to turn off all the features that you would buy a smart phone for is crazy, then why own one. Apple laughs all the way to the bank and they still do not have the guts to go for a recall or even admit they are problem phones and offer something to the consumer they have sold knowingly faulty phones to. You have 3 or 4 Apple loyalist on here singing the praises of these paperweights and claiming they are happy to have one with all the functions turned off just so they can say they own an I Phone. Get your money back now and get phones that work. The happiest day was when i returned the third one I tried and got a phone that actually works and doesn't need all the functions turned off and can go all day and night on a charge.

Since you no longer have an iPhone, WHY are you here?  Your message is a bit strange for a person who just went 2 1/2 days on a charge, and recharged last night.  Do you just like to annoy people, or do you have a business purpose?

Iphone that i bought yesterday with contract is losing like 2% battery life in standby per hour...think im gonna return it..

that means it could go about 2 days.  What did you expect?

Maybe he naively expected it to last 200 hours (8 days) on standby, as Apple specs states.

He failed to search all 780 pages of this thread and and rest of the internet - he would find that nobody ever claimed his/her 4S to last 8 days on standby except the Apple specs.

I have little sympathy for an adult that doesn't know that manufacturer specs are more an advertising statement than something one can expect.

Lithium batteries do NOT have battery memory issues.  Don't run the battery down to nothing.  Its not good.  Only the old generation NiCad have a memory.  There's something better than Lithium coming down the pike.  Just hold on to your hats.  Its kinda big.  Its going to change lots everywhere in many ways.  For now however, lithium is the best commerically available product for Joe Sixpack and Shirley Temple.  Stay tuned for the update.

Waiting.  You don't mind if I don't hold my breath, right?

    Hey....

I was going through my old stuff in the cupboard today and found two of sony ericsson's usb power adapter. It is rated at 5V and 750mA, 5V and 700mA output while 4s' adapter is 5V and 1A. Is it okay to use sony's charger because I have two of them and I would like to keep the chargers plugged in, in two bedrooms and living room and when needed, switch it on and charge my iPhone. I have a couple of Apple USB cables. So I was just wondering if you could tell me?

Technically it shouldnt harm as the rating is lower than iPhone's adapter rating, but are there any other build aspects of the adapter apart from power outputs that I need to look into before I use?...

It will probably work, but somewhat slower. However, it will void your warrantyl\

Mr. Roy can come down....The phone is still fresh and so is the battery....Calibrate the battery a few times and it should do well. And mine lasts more than 200 hrs....So standby time in the specs is probably not an advertising statement, atleast with my phone....Everything else is just an advertising statment for sure....

Void my warranty only if the phone is harmed when used with the charger right...Anyway, I just thought I will ask before using it....I wont use it though...Thanks....

After reading through a lot of these posts, I'm amazed at some things:

    1. Apple replacing phones for what is an obvious software issue related to some hardware configurations.

    2. People posting "solutions" which involve losing most of the functionality of the iPhone by turning off everything.

If I wanted a cheap flip phone, I'd have bought a cheap flip phone.

Using customers to beta test releases is not acceptable. Great business model.

My advice: take your iPhone back for warranty replacement, this is Apple's prpoblem, not ours. Maybe next time they'll do a better job.

First, NO ONE suggests you turn everything off, except as part of a troubleshooting process.  Second, it you doubt the business accumen of Apple, I suggest you read a bit about recent years, profits, and growth.  So, how many billion dollars have you made this year, and how many products did you ship last quarter?

If there is a problem, they might claim the charger was the cause.  Better to pick up a charger online than to run the risk.

Yeah...Sure...I will probably pick up new ones and I have noticed a light hissing or a squeeking sound when the Apple charger is plugged in and the phone is charging....Do not know if its the same in your country. We have 220V domestic supply here, so will have a different charger I guess.......Do check if this is the case with your iPhone adapter too....

Did update to 5.1, did the whole restore thing and setup as new without backing up. Recharged the phone to 100% and went to sleep when it was 100% and left it standby with 3G on and most else was turned off. To my shocking after ~6 hours the battery was at 99%, seemed good at first, but it went worse after i started using it, like 1% drain per 3-4 minutes..

It should be fine. USB is typically 500ma so those will be in between Apples wall charger and your PC's USB port. I would feel safe using them but use at your own discression.
