Q: Aperture "processing" on startup

Hi. I know this question has been answered but I've followed the steps suggested as best I can and Aperture 3 is still unusable. Every time I start the application, its says "Procesing..." with the little worly wheel at the bottom of the work area. It doesn't say what or how many it is processing, just that it is processing. Takes about a quarter of an hour if there is nothing else running. Once it is finished, it seems to run okay but hardly ever use it any more since this started happening.

I've rebuilt the database, no effect. My library is 26.15 GB, my MacPro is exactly a year old, and I have all the latest OS patches installed. This problem started several months ago. I've dealt with it by not using my camera but if I can't fix it, I need to remove it and move all my photos back to iPhoto.

Thanks for your helps.

    Hello,

How much RAM do you have? Also we will need to you where your Library is located /internal or external disk) and if your librara is referenced or managed.

Did you turn on the Activity Viewer in Aperture, to see what it is processing?

Aperture main menu -> WIndow -> Show Activity

Post back, what you see there.

Also it would help to launch a "Console" window, before you start Aperture, if it is not active already (Applications folder -> Utilities -> Console).  Look, if you see any error logs or diagnostic messages that might relate to Aperture.

Sometimes a corrupted library or a single defective image in your library can cause such strange behaviour. If you force quit Aperture at some point after you tried to repair your library, I'd suggest you try the First Aid Tools again.

Post back, if you see any clues to what Aperture is doing in the Console or Activity Window.

    Regards

    Léonie

4GB RAM. Library is default location on internal drive in ~/Pictures/ and I believe it is managed. It's processing now; I'll have to wait 20 minutes or so to answer the rest of your questions.

"Sometimes ... a single defective image ... can cause such strange behavior." Can you not define that as a software defect? How do you know an image file is "defective"? Shouldn't Aperture 3 know that a file is "defective," remove it and prevent you from importing it? Is this ever going to be patched? Its been months.

    Still processing.

Still processing. Console shows repeating error messages every 11 seconds - I can email them to you if you like. They are:

PM kernal: Dara/Stack exectution not permitted: ...

    PM com.apple.launchd: ...

PM ReportCrash: saved crash report ...

PM Report crash: Removing excess log: ...

I can't find a switch for referenced or managed in Aperture Preferences but I'm pretty sure I selected managed. The library file is 26.15 GB.

I restarted Aperture, opened Activity window. It says Updating Library Processing Processing ... various file names that I think are video files. The activity window does not say where they are located.

    Thanks for your help.

anyone? that  is a type of performance problem I have not seen before ...

For "managed" or "referenced" libraries there is no setting in Aperture; this will depend on how you import your images into the database: if you select on import "Store Files: In the Aperture Library" then you will have a managed library; if you select a location outside, then the library will be referenced. This may be changed later by relocating or consolidating the master image files.

If you do not remember exactly, then probably your library will be managed - you can check that by looking at the badge overlays in the browser: referenced images will be marked with an arrow in the lower right corner.

To me your "processing" problem looks like this: Something in your Aperture library cannot be processed properly by Aperture, and on each start up Aperture tries to fix the problem without success.  This may very well be the video files you saw in the Activity Viewer, or you may have an incompatible video codec installed. You could try to delete the videos from the library (do you have copies of your videos outside the Aperture library? otherwise you will need to export them) and see if that will fix thestart up problem.

How do I find the files that are referenced in Activity Viewer?

Unfortunately Activity Viewer does not write a log file afaik, so you'll have to remember some of the filenames.

    findvideos.png

Then search in Aperture with a filter or define a smart album.

E.g. to find all movies select the "Photos View" in the Inspector Panel and add the rule "File Type is Video" to the filter.

In the text field of the filter you may add any parts of the filenames you remember.

Once you have identified your videos, see if aperture can display them properly or if there are any unsupported formats.

If you actually click on the wheel that is displaying, "Processing..." it will open the Activity Window and you should be able to see which images are being processed.

There is a badge displayed on an image to indicate that it is referenced:

If you hold down the shift key when you launch Aperture, do you still get the Processing?

Aha! They are video clips from my Canon PowerShot S95. Such a rare and unusual camera - no wonder Apple does not support it. How do I add a codec for it?

Here is a list of videos supported by Aperture:

    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4025

Your Canon Powershot is not named, but the camera may be supported, the list does not claim to be complete. How do the videos look in in your browser window - can you play them or are they black with a warning badge?

In Aperture, the preview images of the videos are scrambled and they will not play. The metadata page doesn't show metadata but I know they came out of my S95 because of the photo sets they are located in. Canon says they are MOV H.264, which should be supported by Aperture.

It's late here in Thailand. I'll have a go at this some other time. Apple released an update to Aperture 3 yesterday which I am downloading right now. This issue is not on the list of fixes.

Aperture handles the RAW files from the S95 fine. Not the video clips.

    Thanks for you help.

After I installed the 3.2.3 update, on startup Aperture alerted me that Quicktime codec "3ivxVideoCodec" caused "severe performance issues" and recommended that I remove it; I did. Aperture then went through the "Processing" one more time, albeit much faster. Second time I loaded Aperture it came right up, so, it's fixed.

Good to know your problem is solved. Thank you for posting that solution - I know that this particular codec has caused a lot of problems previously - but in all cases I have known this had been on an iMac. This is the first time that I see that this also happens on a MBP.
