Q: What hardware do I need to move iTunes files?

Hi - I'm a dinosaur, so please don't laugh at my question

Is it possible to move my iTunes library on to a compact flash?  If so, can someone tell me SPECIFICALLY how to do it? (i.e., cables, etc)  I have a CF drive in the car now and I'd like to use it.

Thanks in advance!

A compact flash as used in the car and as needed for iTunes would inadvisable for dual use.  While you could, in theory, use it for both, I would be uncomfortable that something would go wrong.

I don't think CFdrives have the longevity of a hard drive and you wouldn't want to chance your only copy of media to one.

Even modern CFdrives are relatively small when compared to many iTunes collections people have.  How large is your collection and how large is your drive?

You need a card reader. If you have an iMac, it may have one built-in. Look on the right side of the computer, just beneath the slot where you put CDs in, if there's another smaller slot that's for SD cards (be careful not to put the SD card in the CD slot though, you'll never get it out!). There are lots of different card sizes, so make sure the card you can use in your car will fit in the slot. You may be able to use an adapter - there's more information at http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3553?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US

If your mac doesn't have a built-in card slot, you can buy one. Just do a search on "memory card reader" and look for one that matches your type of card - most of them work with several different size cards and are usually advertised like "10 in 1" or maybe "50 in 1"  readers, depending on how many varieties of cards they work with. They usually cost somewhere between $10 - $20, you can buy them at BestBuy, Staples, Amazon, or any electronics store.

So, once you have the card reader and you plug it in and put your card in it, you'll see the card appear as a "disk" on your desktop. Just drag the the songs you want right out of the iTunes window and onto the disk. iTunes will copy the music to the disk (you'll still have a copy in iTunes). When it's done copying, drag the disk icon from your desktop into the "Trash" (the trash can will turn into an "Eject" icon as soon as you do that), then pull your card out and you're done.

Putting the the iTunes library on a CF card will do no good for tehe car sterao as it will not read the iTune slibrary files.

You can simply copy all the iTunes media to the CF card and use that.

Connect the CF card to your computer and it should mount on the desktop.

Select all the songs in iTunes and drag them to the CF card on the desktop.

That is all you need to do.

Limnos- I have a teeny collection - only 4 GB.

Joseph, thanks for the info.  I dont have a card slot on my MacBook, so I will move on to Step Two (external card slot, etc).  Your respeonse was very detailed and I am confident I can solve my problem.

Thank you too, Chris!  I will be connecting a flash card & moving some files soon.

I appreciate all the FAST responses.  God bless!

You are copying them, not moving them.
