Q: iPad 3 failing to charge from iMac usb port

If this is happening with a 3rd party cable, does it also happen with the Apple supplied cable?

I'm seeing the same thing, 'Not Charging' when connected to USB hub or port - it seems to insist on the charger supply only ...

(Got mine from the store in Robina, Qld, at 8am this morning)

That is interesting that two from Oz have the issue of USB charging...wonder how many from the States will jump in as people start waking up or return from the Apple store.

Apple still says on the info pages that USB charging with the high power USB port, but with the finding that the unit charges off the wall they may want to argue about your USB port.  Just have to wait and see what happens.

Did you try talking with Apple Support about this?

The quickest way (and really the only way) to charge your iPad is with the included 10W USB Power Adapter. iPad will also charge, although more slowly, when attached to a computer with a high-power USB port (many recent Mac computers) or with an iPhone Power Adapter. When attached to a computer via a standard USB port (most PCs or older Mac computers) iPad will charge very slowly (but iPad indicates not charging). Make sure your computer is on while charging iPad via USB. If iPad is connected to a computer that’s turned off or is in sleep or standby mode, the iPad battery will continue to drain.

Apple recommends that once a month you let the iPad fully discharge & then recharge to 100%.

At this link http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/galaxy-tab-android-tablet,3014-11.html , tests show that the iPad 2 battery will charge to 90% in 3 hours 1 minute. It will charge to 100% in 4 hours 2 minutes.

I have the same issue here. doesn't want to cahrge when syncing on my macbook pro while my ipad 1 has no problem with this. it say's "not charging". I charged it direct on the power socket using the plug but this is annoying if it will not charge on ur usb powered device. can someone please check if there is an issue or is anyone else have the same problem. I'm from Sydney, I bought mine at Myer, Parramatta.

'Not Charging' IS the expected behavior when you connect an iPad 2 or 'the new iPad' to a 'standard' 500 milliamp-spec USB port.

It takes a lot of battery capacity to run the new display with 4x the pixels of the iPad 2 and a quad-core processor, for up to 10 hours.

The battery in 'The new iPad' is approximately 42 watt-hours, nearly 70% more capacity than the iPad 2. The iPad 2 exhibits the same behavior, by the way, and has a 25 watt-hour battery.

I just received my New iPad and it is showing it is charging, but there is no progress in the battery filling up.

Have done a hard restart and it is plugged in woth the supplied power souce.  VERY CONCERNING.

Chill.  Give it some time to update.  You're throwing a lot of stuff at this poor iPad all at once.  Just make sure you are using the 10W charger and not a usb port on your computer.

ya, patience is needed withthe new battery - it is charging REALLY slowly.   I am indeed using the charger supplied with the product.

Just read how massive the battery is.  “I’ll say this: Apple works many miracles, but the company is still bound by at least a few technological realities. So just charge your iPad overnight, and give Apple props for keeping your hands nice and toasty.”

Plugged into my Mac mini early 2009-charging new iPad just fine.
