Hi everyone,

Just got my new iPad and just setting it up, however the WiFi wont connect to anything, it just doesnt connect, it says "unable to join"

I have my iPhone and MacBook connected to my access point with no problems,

I have tried restoring the iPad, resetting the access point (router)

Even tried removing security etc.

Any ideas?

Thanks

When you try to join your home network and you are prompted for the password, what are you entering.  Typically, the iPad is looking for the encryption key, which is most often a 9 - 13 digit composed of letters and numbers.  I'd go to Settings and Reset Network Connections.  Then try when you are prompted for the password, enter the encryption key from the router (usually found on a sticker on your router).

I am entering the encryption key, its using mixed WPA / WPA 2, have tried it with no security so that cant be the issue.

I have also tried resetting network settings and erase content and reset all aswell as restoring the 5.1 firmware.

    Im a bit miffed lol

One add'l troubleshooting step would be to take it to some other network that you know is working and that you should be able to join, perhaps like a Starbucks, the library, wherever .... and see if it joins there. If it does, then back to looking at your network at home, if it fails there also then it's time to talk to Apple.

The only time I've had an 'unable to join' message on an iPad was when I'd stuffed up the password. Are you sure you've entered the right password? Ah, just read that you've even tried disabling security. Never mind that then....

Have you used static IPs for any of your other kit now or in the past, and is it possible router the DHCP is trying to allocate a used IP to your iPad?

Have your tried restarting your router? Might not help, but it would at least take it out of the equation.

Have you, by any chance ever setup an access list in your router to enable wifi access only from named MAC addresses as an additional security step? I did that once and forgot about it! Don't think you can do this on an Airport Extreme but a lot of third party routers enable this option.

    What router are you using?

    Cheers,

I have tried 2 access points now and tethered my iphone and all just say unable to connect

It can see the networks fine it just says unable to connect on everyone of them!

Might have to make a visit to the apple store tomorrow, however I bought it from currys!

Do you think I will have to book a genius appointment?

    Thanks

Have checked the dhcp and thats functioning correctly, even tried allocating a static ip and then connecting and no good. Have restarted both router and access point. The main router is the virgin media superhub and then I have a buffalo setup as a access point.

There is an option for MAC filtering however I have not used it,

    Cheers

Ah, there's your probem. Virginmedia's Superdud.

    Sorry, couldn't resist.

I'm using the Superhub in Modem Mode with an Airport Extreme as the router and I'm having no issues at all. Since you mention in your reply to Michael that you've even tried iPhone tethering and can't connect, it does seem like a potential faulty WiFi antenna I suppose. That's a real downer on day 1.

A quick thing to try is to go into the wi-fi network settings for the one you're connecting to and manually enter a new DNS, try OpenDNS's numbers 208.67.222.222 or 208.67.222.220.

Cheers guys, have even just dug out an old g rated router and tried to connect to just that and still the same, tried google dns settings the lot!

Going to take it back to comet to see if they will swap it over!

    Cheers for your help!

Exellent news. I'm astounded they had some left though. Unless word hadn't leaked out yet. Did you get a like for like replacement? Same size, colour etc?

Yep like for like, have gone for the 16gb wifi, as I dont really use it outdoors and if I do I just tether my iPhone and 16gb as all the media I need is sitting on a server

They still had 10 left when I went back! haha!

I was just wondering about the interesting conversation I'd have tried if I'd gone back and they only had 32GB models........"well, this is faulty but you only have 32GB models left. I think you should give me a 32GB model in exchange since I bought an iPad and you couldn't supply a working one"

OK, wouldn't work but I think I'd have had to try you know?
