Just got my new iPad. I'm loving the screen and speed but there's something weird about it. It gets rather warm/hot after 30minutes of usage. It has never happened on my iPad 2.

Do you think it's harmless or .... ?

iPad (3rd generation) Wi-Fi, iOS 5.1

Initial reports are that the new iPad does get warmer than the iPad 2. Whether or not what you're experiencing is normal or not I can't say not being able to check your iPad. If you have an Apple Store near you, you can set up an appointment at the Genius Bar and have them check it out.

    Regards.

Does it get "hot" or simply warmer than you expected?  Mine is a new 64 gig wifi model and, yes, it gets warmer than my previous iPad 2.  I was surprised by this, which led me to google it and that's how I found your question here...  My new iPad is warm, but it's definitely not in any way hot.

Here's something else odd: Mine has been in the dock since I opened the box.  It's charging and restoring my previous iPad's backup, so gigs and gigs of stuff is being installed.

It was warm on the bottom left.  Not hot, as I said, but warm enough that I noticed and was surprised.

Now, it's definitely cooler (still installing that backup - almost done), but it's warmer on the bottom-right side.

Again, it's not hot.  It's not even laptop computer warm - just warmer than I was used to with my previous iPad 2, which I sold 2 weeks ago, so I can't compare.

    Interesting.

This makes me suspect it's the battery...?  Supposedly, the battery is something like 70% more powerful than the previous iPad 2's battery (but performance is supposedly the same due to things like the retina display consuming more power).

My new iPad (verizon 64GB) definitely got significantly warm, almost too warm to hold warm, when running on LTE.  Not even doing a lot of downloads (just browsing twitter) but having the LTE radio on seemed to cause it to get noticeably hot.

Same here. I'm bit surprised, it's not very comfortable and mine is actually pretty hot (64gb with 4g). Literally hot product... awesome screen etc but i wish it's just temporary thing...

It's a hot one, I think I will use it to fry my eggs in the morning.  Also loves to eat up the battery.

People: make sure you include info about which iPad you have.  LTE?  Wifi only?  Details matter.  And, really now, "frying eggs?"

Mine is also getting pretty hot. I've got the 32 gb wifi model. It's not too hot to hold yet, but it seems to be getting hotter the more it's on. The heat on mine is concentrated on the bottom-left (if you're holding it with the home button at the bottom) although the whole left side seems to be hotter than the right side.

Hi, my new iPad 3 is very very hot on bottom left. So much so I'm afraid to show my hubby because he's going to make me take it store, all on the bottom left and left edge, I was just surfing FB and pinterst.. I'm kinda freakin cause it's uncomfortable to hold on that side! What should I do?

    Thanks for any info!
