Well, there was I trying to set up my new iPad without hooking up to computer.

As I have MAC address filtering for wi-fi configured on the router, I searched the box and no MAC address to be found.

Am I missing something as I could not find it without setting up via itunes and checking Settings?

Click on Settings -- then General -- Then About.

It should be listed right there as wi-fi address.

    Enjoy, it is pretty nice!

Yes, that's how I got it.

However you can't do that until you've set it up via iTunes!

I'm pretty certain older products used to list the MAC address on the box.

It appears you also mis-read the question - specifically the last line.

So to turn this on its head:

1 - is there a way to circumvent this initial 'setup' and get to Settings without a computer

2 - weren't the MAC addresses previously on the boxes?

oh my god, you are right! Totally forgot about that part!

What I had to do is change the settings of my wifi first then connect the ipad, and copy the MAC address once it is logged on the wifi.

Then set your wifi back to original settings.

Yes, that's a logical way to do it and would have worked on my old Netgear router - unfortunately on my Billion router I would have had to manually remove about 7 wifi devices to get unfiltered access then add all 7 and the iPad.

My current router cannot simply enable/disable MAC filtering.

You noticed you misread the question!

So often I skim read and miss something and fail to notice!

I figure you found a way to setup your iPad by now, but I did come across some blogs about this little problem.

The only way I've found as of now is to bypass the wifi setup and once the rest of the setup is completed, then go to settings and find the MAC address.

Then configure the iCloud and the rest of the stuff manually.

That's what I did but only after connecting to iTunes - are you saying there's a way to skip wifi setup to get into the iPAd without connecting to iTunes?

I had the same problem. I can't believe Apple didn't anticipate this and include the MAC address on the box or back of the unit. Nearly everyone uses mac address filtering, or they should be. Didn't anyone at Apple even test the setup routine in a realistic wifi environment?

My solution was to log into my router and temporarily disable wifi filtering until I had completed the setup routine. I was not really happy doing this.
