I have the iPad 3 16gb wifi and it's the same problem here I only see the light at the top behind the black border and nowhere else not sure why and if it's normal

That's my leakage. Near the front facing camera. I've been using mine for nearly two hours and it's still the same as the first moments. Contacted Apple and they recommended waiting 48 hours before bringing it in. I will eventually have it replaced, but with the lines at my local store taking up the west wing of the mall, it won't be until things calm down.

Having the same issue. I have the 64 GB LTE model and the leakage is in the same place - right below the front facing camera. There is also a less visible leak off to the left of that.
Bringing it back to the store tomorrow.

Whoa yeah that is pretty bad. Mine has none of this. Suggest that you take it back to Apple, they have reserves for returns.

You may want to check this thread: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2779476?start=0&tstart=0 for more information on the iPad history and light leakage.
You could exchange it.

Same issue with my new ipad / ipad 3 16GB black LTE AT&T. Took it to local apple store, they replaced it for free. New one has no light leak!

I have this issue as well. I can see the backlight on the top left of the IPAD when held in portrait mode. To the left of the front facing camera. Can only be seen if you tilt the ipad almost horizontally. It doesn't appear to effect the screen quality so I’m not in a hurry to replace it. Maybe I’ll bring it in later before the warranty expires since it is actually a defect that should be covered.

Went through 8 64GB white Verizon iPad 3s this past week from two different stores. EVERY SINGLE ONE of the iPads had this to some extent. Most had it along the top and a couple of them had it along the bottom. Funny thing is that NONE of the display units at either store had any light leakage.

Went to a third Apple store today and went through another three of the white 64GB Verizon models. All the same. Light leakage on all three and dead and stuck pixels on all three as well.
Where has Apple's quality control gone?...

Looks pretty bad buddy. Take it back and have the store set it up for you and you get to see that the new one is alright.
Good luck. I love my retina display!

How about returning it and getting your money back and quit posting manufactured problems.

Manufactured problems? Am I the only one that ever uses the iPad in a dimly lit environemnt? This is not a trivial issue I'm discussing. I often use the iPad in a lab (at work) and at home before I go to bed. In each of these environments the light leakage on these units that I've returned would have been obvious and distracting.
I don't know about you, but when I pay almost a grand for something, I expect it to at least not have these glaring defects.

I feel the same as you. I've gone through three of these new iPads and all three have had this issue as well. Returned them for refunds.
I don't like being Apple's quality control.
