You cannot. Basically what you are trying to do is send a text message to yourself, since both iPads have the same Apple ID (email address). If your wife is going to have one, I would send a text to her Apple ID (she can make one if she doesn't have one: http://appleid.apple.com), and have her sign in on her iPad first.

How do I change the Sign In account from my name to another? Does it need to be an Apple ID or can the Apple ID be an email other then a @me.com or @mac.com?

For iMessage, it can be any valid email address........

And to change it, go to Settings > Messages > Apple ID and change it. And also under "Receive At..." change it to the email address.
