LexMark makes dot matrix printers that support Lion OS
I tried your link, but it came back with no page found at Lexmark. We just purchased a LexMark Forms (dot-matrix) Printer Model 2580n after takling with sales support at LexMark. They confirmed that this printer worked with Mac OS X 10.7 (Lion). HOWEVER, after receiving the printer, and unsuccessfully attempting to get it to print, I called their tech support. They told me that their sales dept was incorrect, and that they do not have a dot-matrix printer that will work with OS X 10.7. They are in the process of issuing me an RMA# to return the printer with a full refund.
Nothing would make me happier than for you to prove them wrong. I DESPERATELY need to find a dot-matrix printer that does work with OS X 10.7.
Any additional input you could supply would be greatly appreciated. I look forward to your reply.
Their web site says Lion 10.x compatible so I assumed it would work.
The only folks I know of any size that make Dot Matrix Printers any more are:
There are lots of OEM manufacturers but those are the main ones. I would call all of them and ask. I find it strange that a dot matrix driver that worked on Snow Leopard and previous versions of Lion would not still work as it's just passing raw data through with little or no formatting. One thing to try would be to put the Epson 980 in plain text FX-80 mode and see what happens.
Also, I know you have $ invested in forms but the time and effort and $ your spending might make sense to switch to laser and just print two or three copies on each print job.
Some dot matrix owners have had success with the drivers from OpenPrinting. You would need to download and install Foomatic-RIP and Ghostscript first. Then you can grab an appropriate PPD from either eps9high or eps9med pages. The PPDs for the Generic ESP/C printers are for color printers. The PPDs for Epson Dot Matrix printers are for monochrome printers.
