Q: What does Untitled CD.fpbf means

Whenever I insert a cd, it shows up on the desktop as "Untitled CD.fpbf" and I can not burn my data or music. Since then I have not been able to use it. It happens with every different Cd that tried. Please help!!!

    Try going to: Apple / System Preferences / CDs & DVDs and make sure that "When you insert a blank CD" is set to "Ask what to do"

    All blank CDs you insert have that extension, which is normal. The fact that you can't burn to the CD is a different issue that's unrelated to that. The exact meaning of that file extension isn't defined anywhere, but it probably means "fixed path burnable folder", since Mac OS X treats CDs as folders, where you can drag items in and they are referred to as an alias, so that saves time and disk space by not copying them into the folder.

     

    f you Control-click on the icon of the disc and choose Get Info, a box will appear In that box, you'll see the word "Burning" with a disclosure triangle next to it. Click on that, and it will show you that to burn the disc your iTunes options must be set to **MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-85J (or whatever the name of your CD/DVD drive.

     

    That should fix your problem with not being able to burn.

    Actually, that's not the blank CD.

     

    The file name extension .fpbf identifies the item as a Burn Folder. (You can check this by doing Get Info on the item and looking at the General > Kind line.) It is created automatically by Finder because, in the system preference indicated by den.thed, your setting is "Open Finder". (You can create a Burn Folder yourself with the command File > New Burn Folder.)

     

    You use a Burn Folder by dragging to it in Finder the items you want to burn. Finder places aliases to those items in the Burn Folder. When you're done, either Ctrl-click/right-click on the Burn Folder and choose Burn from the contextual menu, or open the Burn Folder and click the Burn button.

     

    If you don't want Finder to create the Burn Folder automatically, set the pref indicated by den.thed either to "Ignore" or to "Ask what to do".

    That is incorrect. Blank CDs do not have any name extension. They don't have any name, label, file system, etc. They're blank.

    That is incorrect. You've got that from a tip about the behaviour of Burn Folders in Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger. This forum is dedicated to Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard. The options you indicate no longer exist. I suggest posting your advice in the forum dedicated to the version of the OS you are actually using.
